So £6100 for your main sail, a bit of extrapolation suggests then a 58ft yacht main will be the price of my main, with an extra zero. As I was saying

Pete
Then be scared.

In fact, I'm currently down sizing because I found big is boring. Sold my SUV and got something sporty. More fun.

If I lived on it I would feel differently... but I don't want to live on a boat.

I'm on a yacht anchored off Sardinia. This beast sailed by earlier, and is now anchored nearby. I believe it is S/Y SALPERTON, at 147.64ft. Along with a plethora of super motor yachts.

50% of the boats in that photo would appear to be under 40 ft.

There are actually three boats in the previous picture and two in this one. Zoomed in you can see the dark sails just behind the leech of the main sitting at about the coastline of the far island. It was more than 40' but never got close enough to get a real good look.

Re: Yacht size around here on hook

A seven boat sample is , how shall I say, quite small.

The reason I asked about flags was this could be a clue to who is doing what. BVI etc + really large yacht.... probably a Russian Oligarch.

My slightly larger and still very unscientific sample would be as follows.

Tahiti... ignoring the very very small handful of very large yachts .. see above... typically liveaboard cruising boats . Majority in the 35/45 foot range.... some smaller some a bit larger . Say 90% in the 35/45 range.

New Zealand... vast majority of local boats sub 40/45 foot..... o'seas yachts still in the 35/45 range with most of the larger ( ie +50ft ) ones being Amels. This ignores the 'superyachts' in Auckland.

Chile, on the other hand, local boats run from about 40 foot upwards with 50 something common. Overseas yachts tend to be very much in the 35/45 bracket.

While I was told over 20 years ago by the main marketing man at Westerly that it was impossible to sell new boats of under 35 feet I would wager that the vast majority of new construction is still in the 35/45 range.

Re: Yacht size around here on hook

My observations match Ping's.

We've seen at least 20 cruisers passing through the marina here on their way to Indonesia in the last month or so. Most 40-45ft. Probably more sub 40 than over 45 (including a Westsail 32).
