Seems odd that an owner would hire crew lacking in capability, or the use of wise choices

Depends on the place the skipper was hired to deliver the boat to.. the owner and the plans post delivery..

That makes sense I suppose.

Never thought of making a delivery without proper preparation and plenty of rations.
