Would you fix it up?

38' Island Trader. Would you buy it and fix it up?
What gets me about boaters! I have a friend that fixes up old cars for a Laughlin nevada casino. Cars that push a hundered years old. And salvaged out of drywash banks. That, when he gets done hot rod or restoration. Sell at auctions for a half a million or so. BUT, in our sailboats. If it's old....... it's junk! Boat yards, marinas, buyers, yacht brokers. They are all the same. New is good, old is bad.
I DON'T GET IT?

Re: Would you fix it up?

Motu, the difference is that no matter how well you fix it up, it will never be worth a half million dollars. Restorations and antiques of any kind is an emotional, not logical, pursuit. And folks who want to do something with a boat, usually aren't willing to ante up the costs of keeping a classic. And old wooden boat with brass fittings and gleaming varnish, now that may get a few folks to open their wallets. An old Island Trader? That's more like a 1970 Dodge Dart, not a lot of folks are going to crave owning one. No matter how shiny the paint is.

Ya know I use to think the same thing. About my $75 triump TR3. We just had a guy offer more cash than I ever imagined.

Re: Would you fix it up?

Hey! I used to have an old Dart with a slant 6 and push button transmission! I loved that car. True I probably wouldn’t spend a half million, but then again, for a convertible? Maybe...
I think with boats, if you really appreciate what it will be for you when it’s done, then it’s worth it. Some old designs lend themselves to more affection than others for some strange reason.

Very different things though. $100k wont make the Island Trader worth much, it's still an Island Trader!
And vintage cars go up in value big time.
What year TR3? I had a '60 TR3A myself...

Re: Would you fix it up?

Everyone loves a classic, even if you only drive/sail it on a whim every once in a while. I love to see them, but realistically, how many people are there who do it. Most cars end up as scrap metal. Not that much of a market for laid up glass.

Re: Would you fix it up?

although it may not be worth a milion bucks to one soul, the hull and decks are worthy of restoration for personal benefit. these are jewels and individually created, same as formosa and ct....and WHO CARES what you do and how you do it... the beauty of her lines will make you smile each time you see her. and when she sails you will cheer an d see a beautiful sailing craft. cars are restored for the money , boats for the beauty.
and yes it will take dough.

If you’re going to restore an old boat, with rare exception, you’re doing it for pride of ownership. This is not done for gain.

Whatever makes you think that cars and boats have anything in common as "investments"?

We can always be bought. My number for that boat is whatever it costs to buy the boat of my dreams plus salvage for the junk in the river.

Envestment is a big generality.
Never a boat could be a investment. Well......that is if you a young stud and you charter a bunch of young college girls to the bahamas. That could benefit you.

Re: Would you fix it up?

boats are investments yes but they are those which rarely provide any positive returns other than enjoyment and repairing fun.
