World Cruising with Hunter 23

Just bought a 1987 Hunter 23 wing keel boat to sail to Florida keys then to England. I am going to set it up for singlehand sailing and also do some modifications to the boat for the trip. Any ideas would be useful.

I am sure you are correct. But I am looking for adventure and don't want to travel with a big boat and big expense.

Yes, great idea! You could sell shares in it to fund the trip. Where's the down-side? If you make it, great, your investors paid for your trip. If not, then what do you care?

Ouch..that's a very light boat (less then 2500 lbs)to be crossing the ocean in...how much sailing experience do you have? Maybe try some offshore sailing first in it...Good luck!!

Mate, one thing is to look for adventure and other look for troubles,im not saying you cant do it, you can do it in fact ,,, just measure the risk involved!!

Wow, crossing the Atlantic in a lightly built Hunter 23 day sailor. I guess that would rank somewhere between hair brained and dumbass on the personal risk scale. Might even eventually earn you a spot in the Darwin Awards. Good luck.

Great reply, guess I will have spend some of my IRA to buy a bigger boat. I am looking at a Ericson 30, would that work??

It's not the size, a Flicka is a 20 ft boat designed to go offshore. It's the quality of the boat.

Ericson made decent boats, but what is the condition of the one you are looking at?

It doesn't have to be a bigger boat, but it does need to be a better built boat.

The particular Hunter model is not an offshore boat, there are offshore boats that are small and for the cost of upgrading , reinforcing the rig, bulkheads rudder ....just not worth it. Get the right boat

A well founded Albin Vega 27 would be inexpensive, and they certainly are capable. The Nor' Sea 27 will cost more, but certainly is extremely capable.
