Re: Wing keel in the Chesapeake?

I realize you are getting plenty of answers to your keel question but I have a question / suggestion for you about your general plan. Have you found a Chesapeake Bay area marina that will allow you to keep it stored, fully rigged on a trailer that you will have unobstructed access to and has a boat ramp that you can use that is deep enough to launch a keeled sailboat? You might want to get the marina situation understood before you buy a boat. JMHO

To continue this line of thinking, I found after owning 4 beach cats that the worst thing was having to set it up each time before and disassemble after sailing.

That made it almost not worth the trouble so after the first year of ownership on boat number one, I started finding places where I could keep the boat fully rigged and on the trailer ready to go.

Even after moving to Florida, I found an apartment on the water where I could have my two beach cats rigged and tied down just above high water.

During racing season was the only time I had a boat disassembled and on a trailer. My last boat took an hour and a half to setup with the spinnaker pole and retrieving system

For you, it might be better to by a Catalina 25 and keep it in a slip.

Or get a slip for the boat during the sailing season.......

Scrimshaw raises a good point. Backyard boats in Galesville will do this. I believe holiday hill up the Rhode river also (I think they finally had the electric wire removed from over the drive). I have not looked elsewhere

When I upgraded from my Hobie sx18 to a Hobie Miracle 20, I kept my sx18 on the beach wheels rigged, and kept the 20 on the trailer at home ready to go to regattas during the regatta season.

That's similar to how I did it.

I had my Nacra 6.0 tied down just above high water, and the Nacra Inter 17R (precursor to today's Nacra F-17) on the trailer for the races/regattas

I was told that Casa Rio in Mayo does this, but I have not communicated with them directly. Grateful for Scrimshaw's recommendation and I will follow up. Thanks to all who are contributing!

Re: Wing keel in the Chesapeake?

You might want to look for a Beneteau First 210/211/20/21/22 (different model years, all have same hull, some differences in rigging). The swing keel is very handy for gunkholing. Comes with a very workable weekender-type cabin, and a spot for a portapotty under the cockpit sole. The Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating program uses a modified version of this to take disabled people out on the water, so it is very safe.

Thanks Cantor! I am feeling some displacement creep:
My original target was Capri 18 1,500 lbs
Suggestions to go with Capri 2,250 lbs
Then Beneteau First 22 3,064 lbs

I was hoping to use a smaller vehicle, like a volvo S60 to tow, so I worry that this is pushing the envelope and I would be adding a V6 truck or SUV to the shopping list...
