Wife gets sick with Diesel smell??

We have a 28' Sabre and the smell of the Diesel makes my wife sick. I am exploring the idea of switching to a cat with an outboard or maybe electric motor in a monohulled boat. Anyone know of a catamaran (brand) with an outboard option. Thanks Doug

PDQ. I delivered one of them from Tortola (after another Capt allegedly bailed) to Exuma. Great little boat that can even kick a small rooster tail under sail

Re: Wife gets sick with Diesel smell??

Unburned Diesel or Diesel exhaust?
If exhaust you could put a hose on the exhaust and have it discharge underwater, or avoid downwind motoring.
If you do the hose thing, know it needs to come off when motor is shut down, cooling exhaust gasses could pull a vacuum and pull water to the motor, not very likely, but it could happen.

Or just put an outboard on it? Outboards work on Mono’s as well as Multi’s?

Do you mean exhaust fumes or the smell of diesel fuel in the boat? If the former it might be time to have your valve lash adjusted and your injectors serviced. If the latter it’s time to track down a fuel leak in your boat. You should not smell raw fuel at all.

Sometimes, like motoring with a light following breeze, some exhaust fumes are difficult to avoid. In those cases, if I have someone sensitive onboard or myself find it annoying, I’ll throw up the sails and consign myself to going slow or alter course a bit to see if that helps.

I would try a few things before taking the drastic action if changing boats.

I tell ya - I hate the smell of a diesel engine running. I don't know how anyone can stand it. I'm surprised the issue is not more widespread.

Of course, it probably proves I'm just an oddball. Tell your wife I agree though.

Simple solution...
Get a sailboat.

I also get quesy from diesel fumes. However, I am sure it can be eliminated by a good mechanic.
We do not have any smell on our boat.
Unless you engine is beyond help there is no need to change boats - first consult some good diesel engineer.

Our tell her the choice is between getting a bit queasy from the smell of diesel or getting burnt alive by having gallons of highly explosive petrol on board!

If it is diesel fuel smell that is the problem, fix the leaks, then clean up the mess. There is no reason you should be able to smell fuel in the cabin or cockpit. Heck, not even in the engine room! Think about this... if you have a gasoline engine, smelling gasoline would be an immediate alert to a potential explosion hazard. You wouldn't tolerate it.

If it is diesel smoke exhaust that is the problem, make sure your engine is tuned up properly (if you can see smoke then there is a problem)--and sail more.

Of course, if you really want a cat, or an electric boat, or (go for it!) an electric cat... we'll be happy to tell you wife your current boat is a lost cause!

Re: Wife gets sick with Diesel smell??

My wife does too. We have a 38' Tristar Trimaran and had a custom exhaust made that has a 3" exhaust hose that goes up the rear shroud about 20 feet. We never smell diesel fumes even in reverse! image attached.
