Re: Why the hate on Island Packets?
My Roberts 38 started life with a cobalt blue dress, didn't take long before it became white......The Beneteau has a blue hull....a darkish blue....looks nice when all polished up, but the smallest scratch shows up white and near impossible to buff out...larger scratches show like a neon light...
Not for love nor money would I ever want a colored boat again...

Re: Why the hate on Island Packets?
I've cruised on them a few times and really admired their aesthetics and mechanical design. IMHO They are robust, have pleasing lines, and have huge amounts of storage. To me, they'd be a great boat to take offshore in heavy winds and seas. However, for coastal cruising they are heavy and won't go anywhere fast in light winds.

Not quite sure you can compare the two...

I coastal cruise in an IP40 and find it sails surprisingly well in light winds considering it's displacement. I really like 5 knots in flat water though, allows on to really enjoy the passing scene, be off the helm for making coffee etc.

Re: Why the hate on Island Packets?
My 1st and only boat is my IP460. Never sailed in my life when I bought her but have crossed the Pacific twice so far, equator twice, almost 25,000 nm's and can single hand it anywhere...boat sails itself.

Re: Why the hate on Island Packets?
I am attaching an image indicative of a light wind performance of a smaller IP, so the people who state how poor it sails in light wind conditions can quantify their statements in a future to get some credibility.
In the picture, the instruments show 5.8 knots of apparent wind speed with the 4.1 knots of the boat speed speed through the water while sailing at 120 degrees to the apparent wind under a gennaker only. These are typical numbers in benign sea conditions. By the way, the boat in front left the anchorage about 10 minutes earlier and was able to maintain the distance between us. It had about twice the waterline length and was flying a spinnaker and a main sail. Was sailing slightly closer to the wind too.

Re: Why the hate on Island Packets?
I honestly do not understand why people get hung up on a color. As long as the hull color does not resemble a color of a porcelain toilet, it is a good color.

Colors ( (there are two colors) are by the developer, former owner , managing CEO and only designer of everything Island Packet, Bob Johnson, N.A.

Re: Why the hate on Island Packets?
We don't do a lot of passages (two overnighter max), but we rigged a lee cloth for that center slide out berth. Can't imagine a better spot to spend a good night at sea. We have even pulled it out into a double for a couple of bad anchorage nights. The V berth is home at anchor.
Frankly
