I have a 1981 S2 11.0C that I am really happy with, but my overall favorite manufacturer of Sailboats is "Hunter", by far! I like the layout, the brightness, openness, the gull-wing keel, and the arrangement of their mast stays. If I could I would have one, but it's price is a little out of my range, well, a lot out of my range, but one can dream.

Hans Christian... A wee bit of work but beautiful craftsmanship. I find myself staring at Oysters and a Swans too.

Re: Who is your Favorite Boating Manufacturer

I could say Pearson because I own one. However, I would have to say I like the designer (Alberg) rather than the builder. When the Tritons were first coming out and GRP was a "new" material, they built the solid hulls. It makes for a heavy, seakindly, hull. Built like a tank, they were. The rigging was a fair match. The decks were balsa core which now get soft with a morning mist. The Triton was built as a weekend cruiser and her below decks were Spartan with much exposed rough fiberglass laminations throughout. However, some folks have sailed properly equipped Tritons around the world.

And, boy can she go to weather. She can take whatever punishment the sea and wind can dish out. There are better boats going downwind but hundreds remain and are beloved (some say obsessed over) by her owners. There is little brightwork but her lines are pretty, if you like the sweeping sheerstrake look.

Alberg started out working for John Alden. His name appears on the blueprints of the Alden ketch I am currently rebuilding (hull 777A). Since I am essentially the builder of this boat, I will be the one to make sure she is constructed properly with the systems laid out logically and in accordance with accepted practices to ensure strength and reliability. A daunting proposition. Wish me luck.

If I was to buy a boat today and had the money I would look at the Morris 52 RS . Since Bristol is not building any more. I like boats built in north America.

1.6 Million , ..... would be nice .

Scanmar 40, oozes class, very quick but will take you through anything; I know, it has taken me through a full force 9 off Cornwall.

Perini Navi.

But on a smaller scale and lower on the price, I would really like to have a Nauticat! The 43 or 44 would make me very happy, though a 38 would also float my boat.

On a bit smaller scale than PN but more pricy, the Dashew designs (e.g. Deerfoot 56 or 64) are admirable.

Ovni makes boats that make me think: Vive La France. A 43 footer in aluminum would make me happy.

The recent Garcia boat made for Jimmy Cornell is also impressive.

______________

I used to be interested in more traditional boats like the Hans Christian, but my tastes have changed, as well as my willingness to do brightwork (varnishing).

Steady hand,

If your interested in Ovni and garcia have a look at the Boreal 44.

I'm always interested why people are interested in a certain boat design. Some like it sweet some like it fast, other strong, more cheaper. Everyone must have a reason that satisfies their needs and wants. Always have your reasons well defined on paper and do the research before buying.

Cheers

Re: Who is your Favorite Boating Manufacturer

I think the initial question one has is kind of silly without the details of how the boat is to be used or what budget. If one needs a vehicle to haul construction equipment one loves an F-250 and not a Jaguar XKE. That said for coastal cruising with money not an object a restored older Hinckley would be ideal. For world circumnav perhaps a Swan, Little Harbor or Wauquiez would be great. But if $$ is tight a Sabre for coastal cruising and a Kaufman (Swan knock off) for circumnav would probably be a good choice for me.

But lucky me I already have my perfect boat, just need to upgrade some systems for offshore travel and my peace of mind.

Allied Boat Company.

They made sturdy boats, including the first fiberglass boat to circumnavigate, the Allied Seawind.
