Wink Which boat should I buy?

Just kidding. I’m new here and getting ready to retire early in 1.5 years. Will be researching and buying a blue water boat in the spring. Not sure what I will get as I am keeping an open mind. Ive had lightweight cruisers in the past such as a 40 ‘ Beneteau but this will be my first blue water. Anyway, just wanted to say hello and let you know I will be around looking for help on some specific questions in the coming months. Thank you in advance and stay safe!

Welcome, Shane.

You're stepping up from a boat many would consider blue water. I'd be interested in hearing what qualities you look for in your new boat.

Re: Which boat should I buy?

Thank you. The Beneteau is a great boat and I’m sure many sail around the world safely on them. For me though, I would like to upgrade to a heavier displacement boat with:

1. skegged or full keel protected rudder
2. more protected cockpit
3. heavier rigging
4. larger water/fuel tankage
5. more handholds
6. sea births

I’m also hoping to find one that has already been up fitted with some items that I would add anyway such as:
1. life raft
2. water maker?
3. good electronics, AIS, radar, etc.
4. dinghy davits
5. solar panels

I’m sure I’m missing some thing but these are my thoughts so far.

Re: Which boat should I buy?

Your list is easy with enough budget.

But I think you'll have more choice if you look at boats considered to have very high quality build (fitting your first list) - but that may need updating in things like electronics and watermakers. Even 5 year old electronics are long in the tooth these days.

There are many good choices but in the low 40ft area two good examples that fit your list are the Shannon 43 and Valiant 42. Neither of these are inexpensive but great value for money.

Water boats">Blue water boats do not exist.

Buy the boat that feeds the dream. The one that gives you travel itch whenever you look at her. The one that you always dreamt of.

Re: Which boat should I buy?

Match the tool with the job !

Some boats are amazing tools to glide the tropics, but not quite as good to take on the NWP.

Some boats will sail like a dream, but others will be able to make long passages motoring or motor-sailing.

etc.

Cheers,
barnakiel

Maybe! It’s being considered. Seems a little pricier though.

Re: Which boat should I buy?

If you intend to do high latitude sailing, and you choose a catamaran, you'll be adding a lot of weight to it in insulation to keep it from raining below decks in near freezing temperatures.

Our boat is a custom built cruising boat, but lacks adequate insulation to keep the aft cabins dry. We had our first winter outside the tropics this year, and the moisture below decks from condensation, from breathing and cooking, and just air getting below the dew point has been a difficult problem for us, not sastisfactorily addressed.

Ann

PS. If you tell us where you want to go, it will affect (favorably) the input we can give.

Re: Which boat should I buy?

I am tired on of the cold weather so mostly southern. Definitely south in winter and occasional north in summer. I am leaning towards monohull because that is what I am comfortable with. I feel really connected to the water in one. I have had power boats in the past such as a Forumla and even though it was very nice i down below, I did not enjoy it nearly as much.

Okay, sounds like you're in the Northern Hemisphere.
