Which >22' boats fit in a 40' shipping container?

Anyone know which >22' cabin sailboats fit in a 40' shipping container ?
Ones that I know of are: Hurley 700, Marieholm 26, Contessa 26: all pre 1980's it seems

The door dimensions are what will determine which boats will fit. For a standard 40' intermodal container the door specs are 7' 8" wide by 7' 5" tall.

there are alos high cubed continaed wth a hieght of 8 ft 5 rather that the 8 ft high standar box.


you would want a trailer or dolley to put the boat on for ease of in and out. there are also some creative things you can do woth an open flat rack and wheeled chassi

Actually the doors don't mean much as to what may fit in a container you just need the right container 40' CURTAIN SIDE

Corsair made one which was specifically desgined to fit inside a container...complete with custom cut packaging to secure it in the container. Forget which model, but saw one unpacked from a container once...pretty slick.

I know the Sprint and Dash 750's fit in a standard 40'. I am pretty sure their larger ones do as well (not the 36'). But you would have to check to make sure.

Once out of the container it takes at least a day and a good bit of work and man power to get the boat back together however.

Also, in it's standard form, the cat below's a touch wide, but I'm guessing that if you took it apart, & put the hulls so that one's bow was facing the other's stern, it might work. It can't hurt to call & ask. Plus, Kurt (Hughes) has a LOT of other designs which are set up to be demountable... again, worth a call.

Ah, & the canting of things onto an angle might make the bits for the above boat fit (ditto for other vessels), if it doesn't in some other configuration.

And I think, knock on wood, that a 31' demountable Searunner Trimaran might. But that one's iffy, as the wings on the main hull could be a touch wide. Though if a container's a bit more than 8' high, & it's doors are too, then yeah, one would fit.

Also, having the kind of deck space a multi gets you is so choice! Especially for living aboard. Plus, the height of the amas on a Searunner make boarding from a dink, & loading/unloading heaps of stuff from/into the dink a breeze.

PS: A lot of Richard Woods designs would work also, ditto on DIY cats by a lot of other designers (which can be found for sale used, if one digs). There are a LOT of great designs in Australia, & one can also research such things/get ideas via www.Multihull-Maven.com


Or if you don't mind a minimalist theme, & a bit of aftermarket engineering, look at having a deck pod designed for say a Stiletto (cat). You can find those things everywhere, some for not much more than about a case of rum.
If a friend can sail his proa from the PNW to the S. Pacific & back, I'd reckon that something like a mod'd Stiletto would be okay for coastal work, or a bit more. If you need an example/inspiration, just look at the Worrell 1000.

Remimded me of some cruisers I met who would ship their Wharram Tiki 27' to areas they wanted to cruise. Disassembled would have room to spare in a 40' container so could probably qualify for LTL shipping rates...making it relatively inexpensive to ship.
