What's the running temperature of the Yanmar 2QM20?
Hi,
Please, one of you dinosaurs out there... I would like to know the running temp. of the Yanmar 2QM20. I've read Gord May's compilation on the Yanmar, but I'm not sure if 160 degrees F. also applies to this engine.
I hope that one of you older salty dogs can provide the answer.
Thanks in advance.

Fresh cooled or salt water?

I was of the belief that typical diesel operating temperatures ranged from 175-185 degrees F, with the new common rail diesels running about ten degrees hotter. 160 sounds on the cool side.

180° F +/- 5° but gauges can be off by as much as 10°. Just check your thermostat to make sure it's not stuck open. Especially if you're running with raw saltwater.
A cold engine will not burn diesel efficiently.

Like he said is it cooled by freshwater (antifreeze ) or salt water. I've always been told that saltwater cooled in the engine core should be a lower temp.

This Yanmar 2QM20 is saltwater cooled; my worry is that if it's running too hot
the accumulating salt will eventually cause catastrophic engine failure by
overheating.
Thanks to all those who've replied. Your help is appreciated.

Salt water cooled engines should be no warmer then 135 degrees F otherwise minerals will build up on the walls far too quickly. Fresh water cooled engines run at 180- 190 F.
They sea water cooled engines, occasionally need an acid wash to remove deposits.

Many thanks, Sailorchic34... and for the tip about the acid flush, too. You rock!

Re: What's the running temperature of the Yanmar 2QM20?
My 2qm15 is sea water cooled. The thermostat is factory set at 130. It rarely runs over a 100 and I can almost always put my hand on the valve cover. Sea temp right now is 50. Seems to run very efficiently: sips fuel.

Re: What's the running temperature of the Yanmar 2QM20?
Our 2qm20 is raw water cooled and the thermostat is rated to open at 110F. Ditto to comments regarding salt water and salt caking in the internal water ducting.

Re: What's the running temperature of the Yanmar 2QM20?
I had a3qm30, closed system w/raw water cooling. Newer cooler system of the old qm series. Always ran as designed (very cold )by modern standards. Re powered to 3gm30 ,warmer running (as designed) & better hot water system for entire boat. 80' Hunter 37c

170-190. If you see a lot of steam in the exhaust, it's running a little warm.
