Re: What type of boat?

Capngary:

It's a Leaver design - as in "Leave 'er where she is!" :-)

You don't say, but you imply, that you think you might use 'er to get into sailing in a easy way. Don't you believe it!

If you get title to her, and therefore take legal responsibility for 'er, she'll break you.

Now, Cruisers' Forum is here to help. Tell us what kind of sailing you hope you do, and where you hope to do it. Answers to BOTH of those questions are important if we are to give you good advice. Tell us about any sailing you have already done.

All the best

Re: What type of boat?

The jury-rigged mast and boom made out of wood kind of distracts from the boats potential. I think with some work and a proper mast it would be fine.

This looks like a modified Roberts Spray 33 or 36.
Not sure about that mast, looks out of place, but with elbow grease and lots of money the boat will be ready to sail into the suset.

Re: What type of boat?

She has something of a Roberts Spray, the bow treatment. However the sheer line is wrong and there is that raised aft deck and pilot house. Could be wrong. There are a lot of variations. He is online.

To let my inner Sherlock Holmes our a bit you can see some things that tell a story.

It’s a cobbled up creation, not a design. She is much more a motor boat than sailboat. The mast is in the wrong place and does not fit the rig. The hull was welded by an amateur, there is a lot of heat distortion in the playing. She has a diesel heater and perhaps a dry stack exhaust, can’t be sure.

This all speaks to an amateur builder, not adept at welding, rushing through. He had big dreams of an “everything, all weather” boat. And he tried to cram it into a package he could afford. If it ever came from the desk of a naval architect to start with, the pilot house and raised aft deck were add ons by the builder. The “rig” is very undersized for the boats displacement and in the wrong place. My guess is he placed the rig so that it would not intrude into the cabin space. You need to place the rig and then design the interior to fit around it.

I very much doubt you will find a naval architect willing to associate his name with that boat.

Re: What type of boat?

Its a JUNK. Not the Chinese variety, but the "piece of" kind.

Seriously though, it looks like a Roberts design SPRAY 36, built in steel, which is actually a very seaworth and strong vessel. For more info, see the book Sailing Alone Around The World by Josh Slocum. He bought his for $1.

There is very little in common between the original Spray that Slocum sailed and the Roberts "replica" beyond the name... and this vessel only has vague resemblance to the Roberts design.

And to me, this one lacks any desirability whatsoever.

Re: What type of boat?

I'll throw my guess in as a modified and unfinished Roberts Spray 33. Or they just built it to be a motor-sailer for PNW.

Could it be a Brent Swain, "Origami"?

Re: What type of boat?

Gord,

The Swains have only one chine. This is traditional chined construction.

I’ll try to find a link or pic. Slow connection.

Here ya go.

Re: What type of boat?

Well, to me, for chugging around the PNW, I see a lot more potential in that boat than most I guess but then I am forgiving to a fault perhaps. In evaluating any boat I am always asking what the boat will be used for, and in this case, if there are no major rust issues and a sound engine, it might be a great choice for where it is, as a motorsailer, emphasis on "motor."
