What’s the smallest boat....

What’s the smallest boat you would feel comfortable sailing solo across pacific/atlantic and general liveaboard solo.

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

Without getting into specific boats, my "ideal size" for a solo cruiser would be in the 28-32 foot range.

There are some smaller boats that are excellent seaboats. The Flicka is definitely one. But from a liveability perspective, I prefer something I can stand in, and that has enough space to have a decent galley and functional head, along with reasonable berths.

Hobie cat 16!

More realistically at 27 foot is a great compromise for solo sailing.

I would prefer to take my wife so 35 would be better for me.

Thx-Ace

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

These are some of the ones I have been considering in my area, but I need to rule some out. Want to get the most boat for my money so I have enough left over four upgrades. any that stick out as a front runner?

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

The smallest I'd be comfortable in would be 27'-28'. Not the smallest I'd consider safe to make the crossing just the space I'd feel comfortable living in for longer periods. If I was going cruising would want something in the 34'-38' range so I could bring along more toys.

So, most of these aren't exactly "small". And the designs are all over the map. Perhaps if you define what it is that is important to you, then the rest of us can actually make some comments that are relevant to you.

Re: What’s the smallest boat....

Hi I apologize, I saw solo and I mis interpereted. I thought one vessel as in not sailing with others...independent. My bad.
Well, crossings oceans alone...it’s quite dangerous. I feel it’s unethical therefore to recommend a vessel. I mean you certainly have the right to do so but to recommend a vessel would be to endorse the idea...and that, I cannot do.

It is a simple fact. You cannot stand watch alone. Alarms are subject to failure. The risk of collision involves others. If you get in trouble, you will ask others to put their safety on the line to rescue you...because in the end, self preservation is built into humans.

There is no such thing as solo ocean sailing. You are not the only boat, not the only mammal out there. To deny the facts is a narcissistic fantasy.
There is an old Portuguese expression. If you want to learn how to pray...
go to sea.
In the end of the story of Moby Dick, it is Queequeg’s coffin which saves Ishmael’s life. Perhaps you ought to read the book again.
