What Make Of Sailboat Is This?

Hi all:

I am trying to figure out what make this vessel is. My money is on some type of Pearson??? Hmmm. I am new to identification and would love any input. I will get to inspect her in the next few days so no big urgency. Just eager to know!

Thank you
Clara

It looks somewhat like a Ranger, but I can't believe a boat designer would draw that raised traveler. That looks like an owner's "handiwork".

Re: What Make Of Sailboat Is This?

C&C would be my guess based on the cove stripe and overall appearance.

Late '70s to early '80s C&C would be my guess.

How about a Newport 28?

Actually, I only know that I'm right in saying that it's a boat with a lot of birdcrap on it.

Re: What Make Of Sailboat Is This?

Thanks for the quick posts! I am inclined toward C&C as I looked up her cove stripes and they are the same. I apologize to everyone because I know she looks so bad, but down here there are very few who know how to care for a sailboat properly, so she was just abandoned….Just know that if she pans out, I have plans for her.

The cabin windows and the winches at the base of the mast match a C&C 39 from 1972 so it could be that. C&Cs of that era have a rep of being well built and fast, many were raced hard. Hard racing, time and neglect take their toll so you could be getting into quite a project. Google C&C owners, there's a wealth of info out there on the old C&Cs.

Good luck.

Re: What Make Of Sailboat Is This?

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

I am convinced that she is a early 1970s C&C. Does anyone know where her ID plate may be? I have read that the early years have a really thick fiberglass hull, so I am hoping her hull has weathered her years of neglect with some bubbles. (Hoping) I am also hoping her deck is not too bad either. I got on her yesterday, and her interior has been cleaned out of all the stainless and equipment that one could use on another boat, so I will have a long road to re-equip her. Very few down here can sail and no one I have spoken with can really appreciate how cool this old boat is….:-(
But most of her interior wood looks good and the teak floor does not appear to be ruined by water from topsides or below. Her bilges are full, but the dock she is moored on has no electricity, so when I plugged her in, the bilge pumps emptied her right quick.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions or advice, please feel free. Even a good lecturing on the stupidity of such a project is welcome…:-)

Thanks again and someday I will see you all on the ocean.

Re: What Make Of Sailboat Is This?

C&C was an early advocate of balsa core in the hull to save weight. They have a reputation for being well built with more glass on the outside laminate than current builds and few issues with core rot. In short, shouldn't be an issue but be aware. Still would want to get the rubber mallet out and test for core issues. Design wise, they have a reputation for being fast boats without bad habits. If it is a Redline 41, it's one of there best designs. It was so good that C&C sold the design to Newport Yachts who continue to build the boats into the 80's though with a solid glass hull.

C&C hull ID is always stamped into the glass in the starboard upper corner of the stern

Cruise Ship, Junk…ha ha, you guys are so funny.

Seriously though, thanks for all the advice. I will start asking for advice in the restoration section when/if I can get the paperwork to go through.

If I can get through the government hurdles, it looks like she will be free, or just registration fees so that part is sweeeeet!
Of course if her hull is a royal mess, that won't be so hot….

Let the fun begin.
