What is up with red boats?

Seriously, every time I see a boat with a red hull or red/burgundy stripes and I just wonder what they were thinking. Najad even used it as their signature color.

If we ever get to the point of buying a boat for cruising, I wonder if it will be a dealbreaker. Hubby feels the same.
Anybody else?

Re: What is up with red boats?

I'm guessing some people like red. Personally I like blue, but to each their own. I doubt I would let that stop me, unless there were lots of equivalent alternatives available, in which case, why bother considering it in the first place?

Re: What is up with red boats?

When we bought her, the canvas was/is faded Sunbrella Jockey Red.

Red isn't so bad, but when others comment on how they love our pink boat....

Re: What is up with red boats?

ours has a red stripe and burgundy sprayhood, bimini, stackpack.

We get many many compliments on what at beautiful boat we have. Though we rarely are in marinas - every time we tie up - someone compliments us.

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

Re: What is up with red boats?

It's like a red Ferrari or a Yellow Lambo. If you want attention seeking colors your boat better be up to it. A red Lagoon would be a sight...

Edit:

hahaha. actually found one.

Re: What is up with red boats?

Easier to see the hull if locating offshore in distress...? (Same reason for red and yellow foulies).

But I doubt that's the REAL reason.

I'm not a fan of coloured hulls. Anything in the Caribbean or the tropics with any colour is just too hot. The hulls just absorb the UV and it's scalding. I can't even wear coloured t-shirts in the tropics...!

Just plain old white hulls with beige biminis is key if you'll be going anywhere hot and you'd like a cool boat and your canvas to last as long as possible...

Re: What is up with red boats?

I own a red boat, even painted it last spring with red. I love it plus i think it can be seen better so its a safety factor as well. Discoloration is big thing on red, that is a downsize, but i used industrial paints that are designed to last.

Re: What is up with red boats?

one has to differentiate between coloured gelcoat & PU-paint! Coloured gelcoat soon will look godawful in sunny climates, the worst seeming to be green & red, blue close behind & black terrible too (apart from the heat!)
Painted hulls retain the colour much better & usually just get dull & don't fade.
(anecdote I absolutely have to tell:
black hulled -Tayana?- 83, Colon, Panama, named "Windelkind": they obviously wanted to name the boat "child of the wind" in German, "Windkind" - the correct translation - no sounding elegant enough for them they-obviously non-native-German-speakers - called it "Windelkind", not knowing that means "diaper-child". The Kraut speaking cruisers had a good laugh!)

Seriously what's up with white boats? I never have owned a white boat and never will.
White boats and McDonald's remind me how many unexciting people there are in the world.
Cheers
