I thought darker canvas lasted longer in the sun?

One word - visibility.
I've never understood blue or white boats. You might as well paint them black - they totally blend into the background. It's like those idiots who buy black Mustang jackets, because they look more stylish. I'd rather be easier-to-see than a chic corpse.

Along with the name, it works (Grateful Red). Yes, he's a fan.

Of the myriad things to consider when considering a boat, hull colour is a very long way down my list.

White boats and McDonald's remind me how many unexciting people there are in the world.

In hot weather they stay cooler.

Also, colored hulls tend to highlight any imperfections in the layup much more than white.

It's not an accident that most are white. There are other ways to stay exciting other than hull color.

Makes one hell of a lot of sense. I hope you never need to rely on it.
I've often wondered why an antifouling had not been developed in fluro orange.

Anybody else?
Everybody knows that red makes your boat go two knots faster

Re: What is up with red boats?

We've spoken to quite a few pro mariners who ask "why in the hell do you camouflage your boats? White hulls, white sails, blue trim... really hard to see from our bridges".

Red hulls or other bright colours help them pick us out visually, so that's one good reason for red... and some folks like it aesthetically. Your taste may not be the same.

Re: What is up with red boats?

Speaking of color, how do you match gel coat repair colors to an older, off white/tan/beige 1977 Islander 32 mk2.

Chips and scratches in the hull and some spider cracking on deck...

Re: What is up with red boats?

I wasn't a fan of my boat's color, all red, but it grew on me. Sure makes it easy to find it in an anchorage!

Re: What is up with red boats?

I like Red! and I am not to worried about the heat in the PNW.
I also like the name and white stripes on the Grateful Red so thanks for posting the picture.
I wont steal the name but I will go with those stripes, its SAWEET! Big plus is the big bottom stripes will hide the spot where the Wasp swam around (a lot) in the fresh paint before rolling over and dying. LOL

Re: What is up with red boats?

I would think bright red is a good color for a small boat in a big pond. Good for daytime visibility.

Re: What is up with red boats?

Somewhere in the book "Rescue in the Pacific" about the Queen's birthday storm there was a comment by a Search & Rescue aviator bemoaning the fact that almost all of the boats they were looking for were white, blue, or green which are much harder to see in storm conditions.

My boat is white which I have chosen to trim in yellow and reflective yellow specifically so I can be seen more easily regardless of the conditions.

only know of one red hulled boat at our marina .. a hinckley 42 or 50 .. said to be previously owned by mr. Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac.
