What is the heaviest cloth for code zero?

We would like a 90 to 100 square metre light airs code zero / light weight Genoa with torsion line made from durable polyester.

Currently use a Karver KF5 furler with endless furling line and wondered what is the heaviest cloth this setup would handle? Looking at stormlight 510 ( 4.5oz ) but open to suggestions.

While this is stronger and heavier than the Stormlite 210 or DP CPP300 ( approx 3 .25 Oz ) have started to worry that we may run into problems handling this weight.

Re: What is the heaviest cloth for code zero?

I'm assuming that you meant 'gennaker' not genoa?

I have a Karver KF5 on my 44' cat. As well as my lightweight Code 0 and asym spinnaker I have a screecher which is cut very similar to the code zero, somewhere between a code zero and a gonoa. It's made of 5.5oz material. With a torsion line sewn into the luff it furls very easily by hand on the continuous line furler, even with a little bit of wind still in the sail.

Re: What is the heaviest cloth for code zero?

Thats interesting Priilege, We have no experience of a medium weight fabric. At present we only have a lightweight code D asym. which with a low(ish) clew can be difficult to furl tightly and evenly. We find that if the luff isnt really tight then the drum plays up alittle. I have also thought about taking out the brake pin to see what difference that makes. The biggest improvement in furling away in a blow is to partially bring out the genoa on the wrong side so it is “backed”.

We questioned how well the torsion line would cope with a 4.5 oz plus fabric so to hear that you handle something heavier gives me hope that as a couple we’d be ok. Does rebagging and moving the sail around pose any problems and have you a UV strip?

Re: What is the heaviest cloth for code zero?

I was having a few problems furling my furler until I discovered what was wrong. At the bottom of the furler, I had installed a block to make my down-haul to the bowsprit a 2:1 set up (and to stop it twisting). When I tried to spin the drum on the furler, it span easily enough but you could hear a slight rubbing/grinding noise. I discovered that the new block had pulled the pin down by a fraction and this was causing the rubbing noise. I removed the washer under the block to let the pin raise up back into the drum and presto, I could spin the drum with my fingers with sufficient momentum that the drum continued to spin when I let go. I decided to go the whole hog and also remove the captive pin. The only difference is that you have to make sure you don't let go of the line when furling otherwise it will just unfurl again but that's no biggie. I'll comment on your sail on the other post.

I’m going to try removing the brake pin but to provide a brake and some security we have thought about one of these for the endless furling lines:
