Re: What is a "blickitat" ?

From my translator friend
The only thing I can think of is 'blick utåt' which means outward view in Swedish. Could that be it?

Re: What is a "blickitat" ?

Hm... If we are gonna dabble in Skandihoovian praps "havblik" is a more appropriate guess. It's Danish for that rare condition when the sea is so calm and smooth that it appears mirror-like.

In consequence, "Havblik" is a moderately common name for all sorts of ships and boats.

Because "blik" means not only "a look" but also "tin" (in the sense of sheet metal as in "tin can"), and "hav" means sea or ocean, "Havblik" — "Tin Can of the Seas" — might be a suitable name for that little "Splash 33" we discussed a day or two ago :-)

Maybe we can just lay "Klickitat" to rest. In Concrete. On the slopes of Mt. Baker.

But Seadreaming's #4 has merit. It is fashionable to name all sorts of summer cottages and B&Bs on the Northsea coast "Havblik". Hordes of German tourists repair there in the summer months, just like Canadian "snowgeezers" flock to Florida in the winters. So given that Danes' facility in German has suffered commensurately with the post-war increase of their facility in English, a mis-translation of "havblik" as "A View to the Sea" is not an unlikely device for enticing German custom.

Re: What is a "blickitat" ?

Interesting replies... wife banned me from considering old wooden project boats! She saves me so much grief in life... that's why I married her. lol

Those are some crazy pics of the Mukilteo ferry! I used to take that to work back in the day. I was working on Whidbey Island for their little telco and staying at the Silvercloud Inn back in my early 20s. Some little throw-your-peanut-shells on the floor bar/grill within walking distance that me and some co-workers used to close down on occasion. This place used to bring you an oven heated stone and raw fish/meat and you'd cook it yourself on the stone. Got wicked drunk their once and remember hitting the ferry at 7AM for work, barely able to stand. It was a rough sea day and spent much of the ride in the head. I'd never over-drank before that... I'll never forget the feeling.
