What do you call a Sloop without a main rig?
There's a 46 ft or so, aluminum French boat anchored next to me. It has a moderate beam and stern, twin rudders and I suspect a center board. The rig is weird. The single mast is placed way aft. There is no main boom, or mainsail track. Just a large genoa and a large staysail, with long poles on deck. This boat was clearly built to have no main. Is it still a Sloop? Can the thing sail upwind? The boat obviously has plenty of ocean miles.

Yep, that's it. All the examples in that Wiki post are Cats, but this is on a mono. I wonder if the thing goes to weather or not? Here's a pic, triple spreader. The white horizontal is a bimini, no boom.

Re: What do you call a Sloop without a main rig?
Looks to me like the boom is up under the sun awning. It's still a sloop, even if the boom has been removed. There is the possibility that they use the main loose footed. If it's anchored near you, why not go over and ask? I bet you would get an answer. Chuck

There is no boom. It was built originally with no main.

I'd call it what it is, a Delta rig.

Re: What do you call a Sloop without a main rig?
I've seen staysail schooners with no booms and what looks like big fore sails on both masts. Maybe a staysail rig?
