Re: What do these pics reveal?

before you or your mechanic can even think of starting that engine, the raw water cooling system would have to be cleaned, inspected and re-connected.....let us know how it goes...

Good call on the marine engineer.
It may be an easy project for someone such as yourself with extensive marine systems and structural training and experience.

Such a person would not ask a question like this on a forum and is unlikely to know the depth of the rabbit hole into which he will disappear.

I've done three total gut and rebuilds. it's not for the novice unless he has a few years and a healthy bank balance to burn.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

the above is quite true.....invariably trying to solve and fix one problem area, usually leads to the discovery of another problem area, or several problem areas....
in order to fix "a", one must first fix "b", which uncovers problem "c""...etc ad infinitum...

any time and budget you think you might have for this project...needs to be multiplied by 3, maybe 4....

There is nothing there that blood, sweat, tears and lots of money cannot fix.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

Rob H. Diesel Mechanic. Looks like a Universal Diesel. Very reliable when properly taken care of. This may not have been. The heat ex-changer is what is missing, where the unconnected hose is lower back of engine. #1 does the engine turnover manually when you attempt to do so from the Crankshaft Pulley? #2 Does the oil look black and at normal level, (that is a good sign.) #3 If milky or high, then likely to have internal damage. #4 Check Trans fluid normal Height and red (that is a good sign). Overfilled or milky, likely internal damage. Exhaust looks like it just got some attention. That portion of the pipe is not cooled and it is customary to wrap with heat shield, It insulates the heat to the pipe and does protect things around it.

Unless you are very handy with proper repair techniques or money you should probably pass. There is a lot of work & $ there to bring it back to good operating condition. Yes that is just the engine and trans.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

Maybe these are photos from a Craigslist ad offering to pay you to take it off their hands.

Re: What do these pics reveal?

shouldn't the exhaust hose go down to the waterlock, not vertically upward for 2' before going down? Wouldn't quite a lot of water run back to/into(?) the engine when same is stopped?

I would neither agree or disagree.

The right attitude along side the willingness to learn and do some of your own research will get you alot further than anything.

I don’t disagree however on the financing.
