Westsail Advice Needed

Hi Folks,

I need some advice. I have a Westsail 32' from 1985 that I need to do something with. She hasn't been sailing since the pandemic and suffers from a lack of attention. The boat is currently in a slip at a marina in Jacksonville, FL, but I need to move it (hopefully) to a local yard for haul out.

Are there any recommendations for yards in the Jacksonville area?

It wouldn't be worth trying to go through a broker considering the age and value of the vessel. Any recommendations for finding a new owner? Has anyone tried selling through eBay with any luck? Are there better options? Should I donate the boat to, for example, the Boat US Foundation?

Thank you for any advice you may have.

Your best bet would be to take to Green Cove Springs marina on the St. Johns.

They have a huge storage yard there, where boats go to die, but you could also find a buyer there, as there are many DIY-yers there.

The Westsail 32 is quite the antique, but the boat has a following, so you'd need to advertise it wherever you can.

Re: Westsail Advice Needed

A 1985 Westsail is a pretty young Westsail -- I assume it was owner finished and launched in 1985? The younger age might make it a little more desirable, but there's a cult following for these boats and there are still young people like myself out there buying them.

I would check out the Westsail facebook group too and post it over there -- It's an active community. But Sailboat Listings is another good place, and craigslist of course. We ultimately found ours here: https://www.westsail.com/Westfs.htm

Ours is also a young boat, launched in 1987, and probably the last Westsail that came out of the molds before they were abandonned.

2nd vote for Green Cove Springs Marina. I am there now in the work yard. I just ground off all the gelcoat from my Endeavour 32 - it was full of tiny little blisters ! Now I'm putting on epoxy and barrier coat and bottom paint. The community of cruisers here in the yard is fantastic, lots of help and camaraderie.

The only problem is they are usually about 2 months out on booking. It is a really busy place because it's as affordable as you can find around here. Here is a link...

Re: Westsail Advice Needed

Do dive on the boat if it has been stationary for 4 years. The prop will be a sphere of biofouling, and the hull will need scraping, or it is going to be VERY hard to move.

Check the Westsail Owner's Association, also (www.westsail.org). There usually a few "watchers" on that site looking to purchase.
