I am hiring out the bottom the first go round. It needs to be blasted as well as the bright work needing to be done. I actually like doing bright work (I do a lot of wood refinishing at home) and so that seems like a better way to spend my time. Cleaning the boat out and seeing what is there is a great idea. Someone suggested to me that before it hits the water, trace and label all the hoses....
There is a marina here in town I am trying to get into, they just sent out their contracts but I am also talking to the one in the next town, it is 20 minutes away, but it is more expensive too. One thing at a time.
Before I put in the offer I got quotes on anything and everything I could think of, sails, rigging, insurance, bottom painting, bright work, name changing, taxes, registration, slip and storage fees. I am sure there are things I forgot but I wanted to have a relative idea of what I was negotiating with.
Now I just have to start, that is the hardest part of any project...putting pen to paper.

Ta Fixe, cool! the Passport is such a lovely boat. if you enjoy brightwork, then she'll stay pretty. (might ask you for tips once i find my boat - have only done simple varnishing, so far)
labelling things, yes, a very good first thing to do!
i once did a personal
inspection of a boat in which the former-former owner had labelled everything (valves, seacocks, tubes) so clearly and so well. each seacock had a bung tied to it, ready. spare
parts for the impeller, the
fuel filters, everything was clearly labeled (sizes included). all his
manuals were organised with notes (including the dates and the contacts of those people who
sold him the product). it was incredible (incredibly incredible). the boat immediately made so much sense to me.
another thing, after clearing her out, i would suggest that you
paint her
bilge, make it spotless. choose a light-ish color, so that you will be able see the smudges of chalk and/or water-based pens (to see from where
water is coming in, if needed). and to find things that drop... find a good place to keep a magnet, a little telescopic magnet if you can find one. these can be handy.
oh, yes, the
watermaker in the
bilge ... maybe clean it up a bit (as you can), give it a name and tell it to hang in there for a while.
hope you found a marina and are getting things sorted!!
