I thought it would be fun for the members to vote on what they feel is the "Best Blue Water Cruising Sail Boat of All Time". I know this means a lot of things to a lot of people so I will be looking for the reasoning behind your opinions as well. I thought at the end of the balloting I will tally up the results and award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place standing and post it to the forum.

Why would'nt it be my boat? An Ingrid 38? Designed by Colin Archer in 1898. Of course the design has been upgraded a tad. He was Knighted for the design. I do not know of any other designers that were Knighted for their designs. That has to to mean something. Alll kidding aside(kind of). I hope most people are happy with the vessels they have.

I would think many people would like an Oyster of manageable size, say 50 ft. etc.
They are made for short handed sailing and are quite nice below.

I am not a fan of Swans as a cruising boat. They are quite brutal below, difficult to sail and really ought be left to racing people. They should put out a cruising range and have someone sensible run it.

Who knows what is the best… but arguably the Colin Archer Westsail 32/Ingrid 38 hulls have opened up much of the globe to ordinary (well, perhaps extraordinary) sailors… The Bermuda 40, a somewhat different vessel did the same at least in more tropical climes… not to mention several of the heavy super-glass boats of the early/pre-charter era… most of the rest, while breath-taking technologically and worthy of consideration are Johnny-come-lately’s capitalizing on the increased net worth of the baby-boom generation, and allowing them to go where the pioneers had already been – albeit with electric winches, CDs, DVDs, Video conferencing and Satcom… Even the occasionally maligned Tahiti ketch might be in there too, given that it was the low-bucks builders’ special long before… however, I don’t think all; that many got completed…

I like to think my Hans Christian is built like a brick $#!+ house. It's based on the Wetsnail 32 to some extent, but I think it really improved on it. Mariah's are nice too.

The crew is really a lot more important than the boat. Crews break before boats do.

the much-beloved Guerney-designed 72-ft Windward Passage, no doubt the greatest racing yacht ever built on a beach. As Simmons motored us another 150 feet up Newport Bay, there was Passage, positively gleaming in her berth. Her current owner, who reportedly takes her sailing every Friday, is keeping her in perfect condition. We salute him.
