question: What, besides size, would in your opinion be the main diferences between a good blue water and a good coastal crusier? Seems to me most Water boats">blue water boats spend most of their lives in costal waters anyway

If a Hughes 48 is not on the list someone's not paying attention.

a couple of feet difference would not mean much. We are talking costal vs. bluewater not delta or inland lakes and waterways craft for which draft would be extremely important

If you plan on spending some time in Florida and the Bahamas in your blue water boat, draft is important.

I'll jump in on that one. Bluewater: I'd say the layout of the interior is well designed to be safe and comfortable in a seaway while heeled over, lots of handholds, a companionway area that can take a splash or two, berths that are comfortable for crew going off watch, on either tack (preferably not up in the bow!), aft cabin or big quarter berths, very accessible engine room, rock solid hull with a very sea-kindly motion, fairly full keel with a keel hung rudder or a skeg-hung rudder for strength/resistance to damage... have I missed anything? Oh, staysails and mizzens (either yawl or ketch) can come in handy too... just my preferences...

Allied Mistress 39

Oldie but goody ketch with a good layout. Most have center cockpit. Roomy engine compartment.

No doubt, a huge difference.
