Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
VG Youtube channel has excellent stuff this year - e.g. long interviews with all 40 participants, boat visits and BTSs. I watched some and I think the material is very interesting.
Well worth a look for anyone interested in this race.
Very light conditions forecast at the start (in 2 days') and so the fleet will get immediately split into those who like such conditions and those who hate light wind sailing. It takes a special kind of personality to make light day miles and light day miles pay back huge benefits in the days that follow. So watch out that start day closely and you will probably spot one or two candidates to the podium make an early lead.
Another fascinating aspect is the spectrum of age (and, to lesser extent, experience) of the sailors. The youngest (Violette) is 23, the oldest (Jean) is 65.
It is going to be very very interesting this year, especially that with this newer technology we are promised more and longer onboard material from each boat.
edge of the seat and counting back the last 48 hours
PS there is also a virtual race game for those in armchairs (and with good Internet link)

Off they go…
https://www.youtube.com/live/rVM_LBKDeuA?si=xkgkLnQw9jCUwT6V
An amazing video showing the course, various send-offs, different boats and their designs, skippers, pre-start sequence, preps and training, and the start itself - which was slow and downwind, but a start nonetheless.
Being a short and medium distance racer myself I think there is nothing more exhilarating than the start sequence of a sailboat race…best of luck to all the skippers.

👆🏻 official VG channel breaking down the 1st 24 hrs
https://youtu.be/No-YJhn6gqM?si=28F0dFedf1gIBUEi
👆🏻 Sea Wolves’ breakdown of the 1st day, brings a different but complimentary outlook to the race than the official channel
And then there’s the “On Board” series showing short clips of the skippers
-Charlie Dalin leading the race currently
-Conrad Coleman started the race an hour late due to a line in the prop but made up a lot of ground
-Boris Herrmann led at the start of the race and then had to replace his AP ram, now trying to catch up
-next 24-48 hrs will bring strong wind, would be exciting to see different strategies from foilers and non-foilers

Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
I was surprised the ram drive is actually a Raymarine AP drive !!! Doubled.
Passing by Finisterre will give first realistic look at the boats' and their skippers' potentials.
At now Dalin looks very fast and effective. Also how Beyou recovered looks very positive. Le cam in his brand new non-foiler, as expected, high up and doing well.
I like speeds from Maitre Coq - this one will be a dangerous weapon when the hit the highway.

Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
Seems like most stayed close to the coast on the way to Cape Finisterre
Bestaven, Burton, and Herrmann are almost next to each other, significant gains by Herrmann to get to that position
Gains by Beyou, Ruyant, Richomme, Mettraux, Cremer as well
Simon fell back but is well positioned in the accelerated zone
They will all try to position themselves NW to the approaching low, Lunven seems well positioned already

Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
Nicholas has a major rudder challenge.
Meanwhile the info on Boris was he had a keel arm challenge, but the video he posted shows he had an AP (not keel) arm problems. A bit puzzling this part actually.
Videos coming from the boats show morale from beaming to complete doom. Esp the guy on the new non-foiler who somehow trapped his main under the shroud and then could not roll down the kite. I just hope he can sort this all out today and avoid further damage.
Thinking of morale, the top pack choice to hug the coast looks the right choice - those who went further offshore, despite this being seemingly the 'easy' option, suffer big way - the sea is very sharp there today and scheduled to only get worse tomorrow.
They should be here in less than 2 days. Maybe I get lucky and see any of them, if just on the horizon somewhere.

Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
Didn’t see Nicolas’ rudder issue
Hugging the coast seems to be the popular choice given the swell, but Nicolas is sailing outside of the high swell zone and model predictions show him well positioned to be one of the leaders with less maneuvers and sail changes required.
Are you in Spain/Portugal?

Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
I'm way offshore in the biggest breeze, and heading further. One of the advantages of racing unbreakable virtual boats. After 48 hours, my first conclusions are that the virtual boats have yesterdays polars. The boat speed seems to hit a brick wall at 20k, almost independent of sail selection, while the real foil boats are easily pushed to 25k.
The forecasts are for a low developing in 36 hours with headwinds on the coast and tailwinds offshore.

Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
I think Nicolas' strategy may pay out.
One of the cool things is the tracker on Initiatives-Coeur site, it also shows predicted path taken by various skippers, of course things may be different but it cool to see who rides about the low and who stays on the east side.
It will be interesting to watch the paths taken by some of the experienced skippers, especially Jean Le Cam.

Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
Watching Conrad's tour of the changes to his boat were very interesting and surprising. 5mm of perspex for the window(s)? Wow. That is not much for something that will taking waves head on. I'll be very interested to see how that choice works out.
On my cat I have fwd facing windows, 1 of which had a crack in it when I bought the boat. Repairable yes, but finding the same color in 12mm has been impossible. A nationwide company had some on the opposite coast. $1200. yikes. 9.5mm (3/8) might be available and 1/4" is available.

Re: Vendee Globe 2024 #IMOCA foiling mono hull design Deep-dive
Nicolas just broke a single day monohull distance record, his strategy definitely paid off.

The fleet is very compact right now but I think some boats will separate with the upcoming low.
