Vancouver to Auckland - Route / Timing?

If one was to undertake this voyage what would be the best time of year and routing? What would the estimated time / distance be?

There are several possible routes; via Mexico, Hawaii, etc.. I would recommend that you get a copy of Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes. It should be standard fare in any long distance cruisers library.

Use Open CPN to plan the route. Or get yourself some charts. (Charts are for dreaming; eyes are for navigation.) What season do you want to arrive in? [southern hemisphere is opposite to northern]? Do you want to avoid cyclone season? Have a think and refine your question. Trip planning is really the skipper's responsibility, not a committee decision.

Is this a delivery or a leisurely cruise?

If a delivery, there really is only one typical schedule, leave North America in spring (and from Vancouver that means watching carefully for the right weather windows) so as to reach 10N or thereabouts before June and the beginning of the hurricane season in the eastern North Pacific. Cross over the Equator sometime around June, then head for Auckland to arrive by end of October to avoid hurricane season in the South Pacific. You're looking at 6-7K miles if you go pretty direct. How long that takes depends on what kind of boat you have.

If not a delivery then the options are endless, and depend on your interests, what you want to see, how long you have, how many loonies you have aboard (double entendre intended),...

Am looking at buying a Swan in Vancouver and need to get it back to Auckland. Options are sail it back (have a full-time career so taking extended break only option here) , ship it on a container vessel at 45kUSD or use dockwise whose closest port of departure to Auckland is Costa Rica (as advised by dockwise yesterday)

Logistically it may not be possible.
