Jd1: I belong the the Valiant owners group, etc. In 35 years there has not been one structural failure that I know of. Maybe Bob knows (since he has been in the center of things from the start) But I bet you cannot say the same of other manufactures.

That is a strong endorsement of the way Valiant builds their boat and I don't doubt it .... but for my peace of mind I prefer the hull to be just as strong as designed without a network of patches all over the place. YMMV

Point taken- which is why I own one without blisters. A preblister boat, made in 1975. We still take it out to mix it up in the North Pacific.

I agree with you and that is why I am going to forget about the one with blisters and keep looking for a boat.

Although this thread was started by Cherp a few years back, the opening line/question was never answered: How does a valiant 47 sail?
Does anyone know and is willing to share their knowledge, or better still, compare its sailing characteristics with similar boats?

It won a lot of races in its day, and should have excellent sea manners if it is like the 40. I have not sailed one but would certainly like to.

This entire thread has been a wealth of info .. ..I would love to read his thoughts on Pen and Ink versus using CAD for designing boats . I have read some books by Nicholson and Uffa Fox on yacht design and construction and thought of designing my own one off .

I hate the mid 70's had the " Pox " problems . But love that the best designs came from that era . ..especially my dads gil net boats.. we designed our own . similar to The Chesapeake Oyster boats .

Get his book. He talks about the transition from pencil/ink to CAD. Hint: He isn't doing much design in pencil/ink these days except for his famous cartoons.

I wish I had read this when it was written many years ago so I could have responded in a more timely period. The statement is partially true. I owned and sailed V47 Hull 111 for 17 years. It was built in 1982 and was the first V47 hull to use Isophthalic resin. Never had a blister problem but the marketing damage was done. New Valiants still use that type of resin. I don't know the hull number of the V40s that also were switched to this type of resin, but that information may be available from Valiant Yachts. My V47 was a great boat that I certainly enjoyed.

Never seen a V47. Met V50 twice. Stood there looking and looking and looking ... ;-)

What a shame so few double-enders built today.

The V47 and V50 are the same hull mold. The foresail is attached to a beefy sprit on the V50 and I think the keel is slightly different compared to the V47. Interior space is the same but these were semi custom so interior layout are not the same. The V47 and V50 are awesome boats both inside and out.
