Ignore those comments. You asked a legit question and I quite enjoyed the conversation and comments.

We'll seeing as the OP is a member since 2014 and the caller out is 2022 I'll lean towards the older member..

My point was, new cruising boats aren't necessarily faster then old boats.

Certainly the USA doesn't have many high quality boat builders today, Europe and Asia fill that market space.

Yeah that's where I'm leaning Joli, I just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something that the group was had info on.

Jedi has been a great source on Sundeer, great boats and man it would be cool to make passages that fast

On the first point, somebody did mention Shannon. Sturdy, heavy, very nice.

On the second point, ahem, I take that as fishing for an invite. Just go ahead and say it! When can we get a passage on the Sundeer?

I sailed many different boats, from small to big, from traditional gaf rigged to common production boats and since 2002 our Sundeer. The Sundeer is by far the easiest boat to sail. It steers like a dream incl. maneuvering with engine in fwd and reverse, sail handling etc.

Much of that is because it is a ketch, i.e. my main mast and sail are like that of a 46’ sloop

Shannon are great boats, I've actually seen a few of them. kind of like the Alden great boat no scoop or drop down for easy boarding but other than that great boats.

In general, the longer the boat the faster it's going to be. And more expensive to run but we don't talk about that.....

Marinas and boatyards is where the extra cost is… out at anchor it’s the same as any.

Well, a recent quote from North for a 3di main is $46,000 so it's more then just slipping or parking the boat. Bigger boat, higher loads, bigger gear... Unless you're willing to accept deferred maintenance there is a cost to run the boat.

I don’t think the raw speed per se is a defining factor for lots of sailors. If it was we’d all be buying pogos , Achaumboults and J-boats

Modern designs primarily tend to encapsulate the latest hydrodynamic fashions and thinking as well as a modern design aesthetic. It would seem most buyers agree with that.

I hear you. But when you want 3d sails you have to race what you can afford! Most Sundeers use Dacron sails, which they get away with because of the fully battened design. We opted for radial cut and Hydranet material which extra cost we expect to regain from longer lifespan. That set of sails we got in 2004 and still holding shape like new. I believe it cost us $20k for jib, main and mizzen; all radial cut, all Hydranet.

But sure, bigger sails cost more. A 46’ sloop has the same main as we but a genoa which is much more expensive than our 95% jib, but we loose that advantage with the mizzen so yes we’ll pay a but more… the question is how many % more compared to that 46’ sloop?
