Re: Urgent. Help with name

I reckon avoid a name that displays foibles of the owner (overdraft, boardroom, costalot etc)
A boat name should be something about the boat or boating....imho

Phonetically easy - if you are cruising around in non-native speaking areas they will butcher the name like a starbucks barista...meaning you may not hear the boat name when you need to, or may end up confusing other boats. Fewer simple syllables mean clearer comms. The examples above are a nightmare as are An Faoilean (Seagull in Celtic)...certain languages have issues with certain letter sounds.

On this one, I think not just 1 - 2 words, but no more than 2 - 3 syllables in most cases. Once you get beyond 3 syllables, most names start to get long and awkward to use via VHF.

finally...long names are often difficult to find a suitable location on the boat, whether on the transom or aft stern hull.

keep it short...keep it simple....is the trick....

I agree, my previous boat name was «*Northbound*» and after hailing the bride tender , they’re looking on the wrong side when I was heading south!

Re: Urgent. Help with name

Any of them would be good names, but I would drop the "II" or the "78."
I only think "II" is appropriate if you still own "I", or maybe if it is still local to you and might be mistaken for each other.

It's fine if people ask about the meaning of a boat name. It's a good way to get to know your neighbors in a new anchorage.

I expect that by the time you finish spelling out your name on the Mayday call, the incident will be over!

I agree with the comment that Rachel June sounds like a fishing boat.
Dreaming is good: it's a move on from your little boat "The Dreaming", and kind of like you've arrived.
Yes I like Starwood too.

I am in the process of renaming my boat and am interested in what procedures and ceremony you will undertake.

None. I'm not supertitious even as I admit that ritual and ceremony can have great meaning however I don't believe they change fate or luck in any way.

When I put the new name and hailing port on the hull, I may take a little drink of whatever whisky is at hand. Then again I just like to find an excuse to have a little whisky. Maybe I'll pour a little on the bow head just to make it feel like we've officially united in whatever adventures/challenges/heartache are ahead of us.

Re: Urgent. Help with name

I recently renamed my boat.

I gathered my regular crew and did the standard ceremony (for which there are over a million hits on Google) immediately before heading out on our regular weekend sail.

All around a bit of fun and no-one took it seriously.

Re: Urgent. Help with name

Just to add some fun here:

I won a small lawsuit and spent the money buying an old sailboat a couple years ago and decided to change the name. Of course, asked around the family and friends, getting some pretty funny names. One friend said, "Well, it's like you won the lottery and you've decided to make one of the most terrible investments possible with the money." (said jokingly, but he's not wrong!)

"Name it after something even less responsible you could spend the money on"

At the time, there was a hysterical video clip that was played on live news, where a guy was coming out of a shop after buying some lottery tickets and a newscaster was doing a live interview about the lotter hitting some sort of massive amount. She pulled this guy aside and asked him, if he won, what was he going to spend his money on?. After a brief pause, the guy leaned into the mic and said, "Hookers and Cocaine", gave a little smile and walked away while the newscaster's jaw hung loose.

So, after putting his "Hookers and Cocaine" name on the list next to everyone else's suggestion, we had a vote and "Hookers and Cocaine" won.

I was *almost* ready to pull the trigger and do it, but then just imagined myself calling the coast guard in an emergency.

Anyway, then my father in law died and we just named the boat after him. No fun at all.
