Untold: The Race of the Century (on Netflicks)

Netflicks has just put this on as far as I know and it's about Australia II and the 1983 Americas Cup.

Should be good just thought I'd pass the word.

It's part of what got me into sailboat racing ..................and sailing

Plus the 1987 America's Cup in Perth with Big Dennis coming back. (which I many times watched the races live at 1-3 am or so since I was working the 3-11 shift back then)

That boy had some unbelievable pressure on him in the days after the 1983 loss until they figured out the boat he was sailing against was special as well as it's crew

Re: Untold: The Race of the Century (on Netflicks)

So after losing the America's Cup in 1983 the New York Yacht Club blamed big Dennis (Dennis Conner) for the loss not Ben Lexcen's revolutionary wing keel.

So they fired him and he became a carpet salesman........

but then decided to try and get a new job with another America's Cup Syndicate out of San Diego a couple years later and the rest is another history lesson.

The America's cup....ah....what a topic. This is the playground for the world's millionaires and billionaires.
Probably the best thing that ever happened to it, was leaving American shores.
Let the richest man win !!

Excellent documentary, a pity that the Dutch contribution to yacht design was underexposed. The test basin, the quality of the yacht designers and building are world class.

And then when I'm looking for a comfortable fast and safe cruiser I start looking in France. I don't get it myself either.

Rich men sailing is okay, but a rich man sailing a used yacht and winning the America's Cup with it now that is quite interesting.

At least Ted Turner and Gary Jobson thought so back in the day.

And on top of all that they couldn't get quality sails after they started winning races because the competition were the best sail makers and surprise they wouldn't sell him any sails.

He did have a member of his crew though with the name of Doyle .....
