Union 36 Poorly Placed Scuppers?
Hi all!
I found myself owning a Union 36 last year and am stumped on the scupper situation -
There are 2 scuppers on either side of the lowest part of the sheer (one fwd and one aft), but unfortunately, NONE at the lowest point. Which of course means there's standing water in the waterways 24/7 (boat is in the NW) until I brush it away.
For what it's worth, the boat is sitting nicely on her lines and it doesn't seem like there's any ballast problems.
I'm not sure what to do - does anybody have any ideas? So far my thoughts are...rig up a tiny pump system for winters? Cut new scuppers next haul-out? (I don't want to do that)
Any ideas are welcome, thanks!

Possibly-install Flush mount SS cockpit drains at low spots.
Pipe them to side mounted (stain?) or under water thru hull seacock.

Re: Union 36 Poorly Placed Scuppers?
I have rarely had a boat where it all drained in the winter rain like up here in the PNW. The other issue is getting a fitting fully flush to the deck if you do install some more.
I say just live with it. Or go stand on the tail of the boat for a minute.
Is you are living aboard and step in it a lot tracking below, consider adding a thin grate material or Dri Dek for at the dock if it's secure and wont slip.

Had to laugh at that.
Have a Union 36 in our marina, and lots of other boats have the same issue.
As Cheechako said, up here in the PNW it's just part of the boating "experience".

Our boat's scupper drains (Sabre) aren't in the right place either. Our previous boat (J/boats) had the same problem. Designers & builders guess wrong.

Have you considered wicking it out and over the side?
I've seen wicks on a few boats.

Loosely roll up * a woven cotton [T-shirt type] fabric, into a ± 1" dia siphon rope, or wick; placing one end in the ‘puddle’, and running the wick over the side, hanging down at least 1 ft.
* You want all the layers to be touching each other, so it will transfer the water all the way through the wick.

Isn't it obvious? It's so your poorly placed scupper problem goes away. We did that with our Lord Nelson 35 and had no problem at all.
EES seemple !
