Transporting Liferaft From La Paz To San Diego
Hi,
Are you in the La Paz, Mexico area?
Do you plan to drive to the U.S. in the near future?
Got room for a liferaft?
My Plastimo Offshore liferaft expired last year and needs to be serviced. There are no servicing centers in Mexico, so I have to get it to southern Cal (and then back) It is packed in a soft-sided valise. If you are heading north soon and can give my liferaft a lift, please get in touch with me.
Thanks!

It was a long time ago, berferd, but people used to take the bus to TJ, walk across the border, and then take a bus or rail into SD. At any rate, that could be an option. Also, Downwind Marine used to make fairly regular trips to La Paz, maybe you could work something out with them?

Looks like it is not much more to just fly with the liferaft from Cabo to San Diego. I'll have to find out if I can check the liferaft as baggage.

mexicana used to fly out of LA to La Paz, too, also, one time, we flew into Loreto, but like I said, it was a loooong time ago.

Another though....
There is an excellent delivery service on the Baja that we have used numerous times to get parts etc delivered to us. Bajapak is in just about every bus station. If you do not want to bus back to SD you could put the raft on bajapak to TJ. Fly the next day to TJ pickup the raft and then cross the border. It was a very secure way for us to move items on the Baja.
Or as we did just put the raft on the bus as luggage and ride the bus to TJ. Cross the border, take the trolley to downtown SD. Best to also take a set of dolly wheels with you to make things easier.
Good luck

Have you spoken to the people in So Cal who will do the servicing? They may have viable suggestions.

Re: Transporting Liferaft From La Paz To San Diego
Chuck,
Thanks for the info on Bajapak! I am looking to avoid the long bus ride if I can find other viable means, but will do the ride with the raft if necessary.
Noticed your current location...plan is to be out that way next year if the planets align for me.

Thanks...I know Tom and his wife Jeanne...SV Eagle occupies the slip directly across from me in Marina Palmira! Tom knows my liferaft is looking for a ride!

Re: Transporting Liferaft From La Paz To San Diego
Brian,
Thanks very much for your suggestion. I spoke today with Oceans West in San Diego and they gave me the contact info for an agent who specializes in getting things from BCS Mexico to San Diego! Am following up!

Re: Transporting Liferaft From La Paz To San Diego
In hindsight I suppose it should have been obvious, but only after doing some digging did I realize that trying to check a liferaft as baggage on an airline is a big no-no given the compressed air bottle, flares, etc.

Re: Transporting Liferaft From La Paz To San Diego
There may be an issue having a liferaft on the plane with the compressed cylinder.
