Transportation experiences from Southern Chesapeake to NY

Does anyone have any first hand experience (either doing it yourself or hiring someone) transporting a monohull sailboat (40-50 ft) between the southern Chesapeake Bay area to NYC (or Long Island sound) area?

Either by land on a flatbed with mast and boom unstepped or on its own bottom with a delivery skipper.

Boat is roughly 10 years old and in perfectly seaworthy condition.

I’m just trying to understand what would be involved and to get any advice from someone with reasonably recent experience.

I would sail it up here myself, but simply don’t have the time as it looks like a 10-14 day sail if making overnight stops and allowing for reasonable weather delays. Going overland might be a reasonable option as I expect it would be much less wear and tear on the boat.

Any advice/comments?

The trucking option looks like it would cost somewhere in the 6-10k range, once you include unstepping/restepping the mast, derigging/rigging, shrink wrap and loading/unloading charges.

The delivery skipper option also looks like it might fall in the same price range.

I am not necessarially looking for the lowest price, but what option involves the least headaches and lowest likelihood of damage?

Manage the truck setup when it's done. Your's is a short haul, but I had a boat hauled on the west coast , S. Cal to WA State. 1400 miles. Both times damage occurred from vibration etc.
The hull got a hole rubbed in it, all the way through up high on the topsides by the mast/spreaker.
The mast got a hole rubbed in it from the mast support on the truck the second haul.

It could take 10-14 days, but only if you stop every night and take a rest day or two at every stop. The trip from Annapolis to NYC is about 240NM and is only a two day delivery non-stop through the C&D canal and up the coast. You don't need to worry about weather windows on a 40-hour delivery trip. Just leave at the right time.

Going the delivery route is more common, and the total cost should be in the $2k range. Wear and tear will consist of 50 more hours on the motor, unless the skipper is a dolt.

I looked at trucking a similar sized boat from NC to Long Island Sound last year.

Did not get a lot of interest, was told that transiting the tri state area is very difficult for that type of load. Ballpark estimates were in excess of 10k for the haul and then you have boatyards on both ends. My trip was maybe 200 to 250 miles or so longer than yours.

I used a delivery captain and was very satisfied. Cost was below midpoint of the range you quoted for trucking and my trip was 3 more days than yours would be on the ICW to get to Norfolk.

I was happy with the way it worked out.

PM me if you would like his contact info.

You want to do this now, in January or in the spring when the weather is more friendly? You seem to have budgeted much more time than needed unless you are planning a leisurely cruise with several stops. If you wait a few months, you should be able to find an abundance of sail transport captains willing to do this at a much lower fee than trucking the boat.

Re: Transportation experiences from Southern Chesapeake to NY

I brought my Jeanneau 42 DS down from Norwalk Ct to Annapolis 6 weeks ago. We motor sailed down the East River (Hells Gate at the right tide) down the NJ coast about 2 miles offshore in some sporty but manageable conditions up the Delaware Bay through the C&D canal. 4 days, $2400 with only me as the delivery crew. It was fun and great experience. Weather dependent obviously as currents will influence transit time and comfort level if you are aboard.

Re: Transportation experiences from Southern Chesapeake to NY

I brought my boat from Newport to Annapolis under engine (I had no mast at the time ). It really is an easy sail or delivery.
You could plan an easy day-sailing trip:
1. Norfolk to Solomon's
2. Solomon's to Betterton (or somewhere else close to the C&D)
3. Betterton/C&D to Lewes
4. Lewes to Atlantic City
5. Atlantic City to Sandy Hook / your final destination

I put together a little travel map at https://zanshin.travelmap.net/

================================

I did it both ways (up north from Morehead City to Cape Cod May 2023 and back home in Late October 2023.

Your passage is not a biggie.

because you are constrained by time/schedule (two high risk issues) this is a fairly easy delivery by a competent delivery professional, you will find them easily in this forum, if you like names suggestions PM me.

Have trucked my boat from the Cape Cod to Morehead City about 3 years ago,
besides the cost, it was a pain, prep in the boatyard was labor intensive, restoring the boat to its original condition at the boatyard (stepping back the mast, rigging etc.)

Definitively, will choose by sea.

Like I say, this past year was getting impatient waiting for weather and contacted a truck company I used earlier and will be happy to recommend, but eventually found a crew to help me.
