cpt 757, While I have no experience with a transom mount transducer, I have a lot of experience with the through hull type. First, there are many different brands, strengths, signal patterns & types of transducers, which is probably a lot more important than where it is placed. Secondly, almost all transducers look straight down longitudinally, so the placement on the boat should be of very little consequence as long as it is installed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. If you are really serious about the performance of your gear, I would suggest a little research! Best of luck! Retired airline pilot

My two cents...

Why would you want your depth sounder so far away from the deepest part of the sailboat (Keel) or why would you want to know what the depth is at the back of your powerboat?

Now my experience with transom depth sounders is that they get knocked about a lot. In the power boats that I drive, they get knocked back and up causing the transducer to be pointing backwards instead of down, making the unit non-functional until you can reach down and put it back in place.

So for power or sail, I would want to place the transducer as far forward as possible and mounted in a thru-hull.

Thank you,
I am doing some researches for through hull and In Hull.
Since my boat is balsa core, In hull may not work well, I try to find out any space where there is no balsa core covers. Through hull, my boat will be hauled out soon for other maintenance, I may be able to install at same time, but I do not want to make another hole. These are my issues,,,,,.

Btw., can't wait to retire!!

You can make a space for in hull. Make a hole in the inner laminate and the core, about twice the diameter of the transducer. Make sure not to damage the outer skin. Pour epoxy into the hole and laminate some fg over with epoxy. Fasten the transducer as on solid fg.

In General, most sailboats are solid fiberglass below the water line and cored above the water line.

Re: Transom mount depth transducer.

before glueing in the xducer: check with water in the bilge if the location is suitable (i.e. returns are good)
take care to mix epoxi bubble-free
