Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?

You can add the Halcyon 27 to that list, another bomb proof yacht. The MoD used them for sail training for 30 odd years and they were still sought after when the y were eventually pensioned off.

Ooh, great chance to go shopping other side of the pond! 8-)

Looks like some (even better?) have the shallower twin keel design?

Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?

I’ve towed 35’ boats with 11’ beams all over the country. Stopped once in 200,000+++ miles for not having permits. You could easily trailer something up to 38’ or so with the new HD diesel trucks

Yes but my concern is not getting stopped, it's letting the insurance co off the hook if something happens.

Too many conversations from seeing it and dealing with 9 other people I had not seen in the boatyard since sept Anyway, the story is the owner is in Ohio and is contemplating wanting it gone because he doesn't want to pay winter storage fees. I casually know the guy who was aboard cleaning it out. he knows 'I'm in the loop' of knowing lots of people who buy boats because I'm around to 20 or so yards in the region. He said in 2 weeks time or so to let him know if anyone is a serious buyer, ie no tire kickers, because essentially he wants to show it make a transaction and be done. A person with cash in hand could own it for about the price of the California one, and it's in less of a refit condition, though needs a thorough cleaning in and out. Sitting on the hard with someone who knows the boat in and out because it was his old boat. He did all of the work before this owner traded boats with him. He says the sails are usable, but not offshore worthy.
I missed this post the first time around. I don't know where Clamdigger is, but if you are close John, you might check this. The '65 had 1000# more lead ballast than mine, so should do better to windward, a little less tender.

Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?

Cape Dory 28 is a nice little trailerable full keel boat that I would take out in blue water.

Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?

Not to be a total buzzkill btw but just remember that the boats that will fit on trailers are very small inside. And while that might not seem like a big issue, it is. A Pearson Triton which is pushing it for a trailerable Boat is pretty tiny down below. It can get claustrophobic after a while. Of course if you’re in some beautiful place you can go outside but if
It’s cold and rainy and you are stuck down below and pretty much stuck to a 2’ area it can make you bonkers.

Also the older boats are not a good investment. I bought a $6500 boat out about $50k into her and sold her for $10k. They have a limited high value and you can’t sell them for more regardless of how nice they are.

Personally if I were to do it again I’d look for a 35’ Boat which seems to be the sweet spot.

Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?

I’m going to say forget the trailerable part. It’s going to ruin your life.

You want trailerable, get a sharpie or something and do light duty coastal
Cruising. You want blue water, get a nice heavy boat.

Or get a Catalina 27 put it in where you want and take it out again.

Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?

For this brief I would be considering a Corsair/Farrier Trimaran of around 30'

Trailerable, offshore capable, comfortable for a couple, even with kids, and with an excellent tent you can cover the cockpit and some of your tramp area.

Depending on what states you transverse you an get a wide load permit for once or twice a year pretty easy. Here in CT I have done it several times for boats under 10' wide it was like $65.00. Only mention it as you said it wouldn't be trailered all the time and that opens up options.

I always had a thing for the Flicka but speed takes a hit.

I'll throw another couple out there

Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?

I recognize that many would not accept such limitations.

Thanks so much to those who keep adding appropriate suggestions to the list.

Re: Trailerable blue-ocean: exists?

We pulled this '79 Albin Vega from northern Massachusetts, across the Appalachian mountains, and down to our home in central Florida. NOW, my wife thinks she wants a bigger boat. So she (the boat, not the wife) may be on the ol' auction block soon, trailer and all, if I can't convince the Admiral otherwise.
