[QUOTE=jeagles;2381305]Has anyone tried towing a large (32 ft., x 12 ft. x 12000lbs) sailboat over a long distance? I have a truck with
cooling etc. a
trailer with brakes on each axle.
How hard is this? How hard is it to get wide load permits? What other issues?[/QUOTE
No one here has lied to you. Some are lucky to not tell horror stories, hehe.
Imo you need a dually and a triaxle to do the job. Or a damn good tandem with overkill axles and tires and good brakes. Not a job for the faint hearted pocketbook. The picnic starts when you load the
boat. If its deep
draft you need a lowboy to make clearances. You need a well built
cradle, very well built . Youmust attach it to your
trailer, or fab the
cradle as an integral part of the trailer. With 12 ft
boat you want a wide trailer for stability.
Ive hauled my 5.5"
draft columbia28 on a 5th
wheel tandem from nc to al.
It was 8.5 width so no permits. I used a c4500 dually crew 26k gvwr.
There might be a pic in my profile . I have more pics if you are interested.
It took a week round trip. Built cradle on trailer in boatyard.
I'd haul again but i would not prepare a cradle and trailer unless i was well paid to do it. Its really a
steel fitters job .
Good luck!
