thoughts on a Elizabethan 33

I am moving to BC very soon and am looking at boats. I will be living on it but the longer plan it to see the rest of the planet. One boat i found is a Elizabethan 33. it sailed from the UK to BC a year or so back. long keel it seems very sea worthy and a good short handed sailor. I am interested in opinions on this boat as i have never heard of them. I have found the owners group but there is not much info. There is an older YouTube video of the same boat. The specs look good and the Survey is good. it is dirty and needs the bottom cleaned and new anti fouling.

Re: thoughts on a Elizabethan 33

Sloop or ketch rig?

Old school underbody will not be the fastest boat out there,
but the numbers on the boat look ok.

If it still has the 10 hp Bukh it maybe a little under powered and the original 12 gal fuel tank, you will probably need gerry cans on deck for longer sails.

You mentioned a survey. Did you have this done or was it a safety/insurance survey from a while back? If it was the latter, would see if they corrected any of listed deficiencies. If they didn't do them, will generalize that they probably didn't maintain the boat that well and possibly look elsewhere.

It has a Yanmar 2GM20F. the survey is not that old it really needs cleaning. i have the same thoughts on the fuel tank. they allegedly they sail good windward and are similar to a NICHOLSON 32. I will get a new survey done before purchase. it was built in 1981. it is a sloop. the Survey Was clean besides some minor stuff and it did make the crossing from the UK to BC after the Survey.

Re: thoughts on a Elizabethan 33

They did the NW passage in that boat? Does it look like it's outfitted for long range cruising?
Not saying it couldn't be done by some hearty souls, but fuel and water would seem to be the limiting factors. Even if you put the cans on deck there is only so much you can carry and there aren't that many places to pull in to refuel on that route.

If there is an oil heater, you'd probably burn most of the fuel just for heat.

Re: thoughts on a Elizabethan 33

They did what from west to east or the more insane way east to west. yes it is outfitted less a windvane? but they might have kept it. the same boat or make? it has an inlaid table. it has a paraffin stove. i am not doing the NW passage, I spent a few years in the arctic and know to well the dangers involved. It is not an arctic class boat. I am a Canadian I want to sail to a warmer climate when i retire. My guess they did the Panama canal.

Amongst the most beautiful yachts ever built. If I didn’t have family to accommodate and an Elizabethan, Dawn 39, Victoria , or Frances came my way I’d buy one like a shot. They literally don’t make them like this any more.

I have seen examples in the UK with serious osmosis problems and failed deck cores. Boats from this era didn't always hae good enviromental controls so if laid up in winter the resin cure may be iffy. Should be evident but definitely check structural condition, otherwise a great boat, oh an headroom?

Re: thoughts on a Elizabethan 33

the hull is sound but this will be on the purchase survey. i believe the head room is 6 ft 2 throughout. it looks like a chest of drawers inside. The map table slides away and panel opens up with a complete tool chest. I will have a lot of wood to sand clean and varnish.

this is a video from 2012 I believe is the same boat. she has sail a few miles and has had several refits.

The Elizabethans are nice boats from the 23ftr on up.. sail well and are generally very sound boats.
If the surveys good go for her.. You could do a lot worse.

They sailed in from Tahiti about 2 months ago. They had left Panama before covid was an issue and after arriving were told to leave in 2 days, so they got food and water and sailed direct to Victoria. They were emailing CBSA before arrival and didn't have to quarantine. My marina is attached to Customs so I saw them come in and talked to them after they cleared. Then I saw the boat at Van Isle in storage.

Good design I think and can obviously handle offshore work. Here's a link you may not have seen about the design.

Re: thoughts on a Elizabethan 33

I feel bad for them having there dream cut short. it is a nice boat for a couple. what do you do at the marina? i need a slip or mooring ball and a parking spot for my truck. i will be in Victoria in 2 to 3 months time. i am working on sorting out a liveabaord arrangement. I talked to the people that had it in the 90s.

I live on my boat in Victoria Harbour.

You could try calling Josh at 250-360-1211 to see if there are any spots. It is the Coast Harbourside Hotel and Marina.
