Re: This is where I am starting!!!
Shrew - that's really cynical; though perhaps you say "realistic". Technically, of course, you're correct - by definition, an inanimate object cannot have a soul, whatever one's religious beliefs. But, in fact, we all love our boats - sometimes more than we love people, and often more than we love our cars. And it's noticeable, that certainly in the English language, boats (and cars!) are always "she" , not "it".

I thought they were called "she" because they always came back to their buoys?
Wait, in today's screwed up PC world, should I have said that they identify as "she?"

Cynical? Realistic would be more accurate. i’ve owned more than a dozen boats over the years, quite a few cars and several dogs. The dogs definitely had a strong personality and probably a soul. The cars has no soul, but many had a personality. The boats were far more interesting than the cars, probably because they were animate in 3 dimensions, but I couldn’t equate them to my dogs. If you love boats more than people, you definitely need some help

Re: This is where I am starting!!!
Boat use, repair and buying got a lot easier when I got out of the "romantic" phase and considered it a tool. You no longer feel obligated to sail when doing 3 knots, you simply get from point A to point B the best way with a time margin for trouble along the way. You probably have a close relationship to your ratchet wrench, does it have a soul too? :>)

WOW! Did this thread take a sharp turn or what????
Maybe we should just stick to "My what a pretty boat!" or, I like sailing on the big Pacific Ocean, do you?

Your Crosswinds is Beautiful, and like all C&Cs a great boat in all regards, love her & she'll love you back.
LayraLee,What are your plans for future cruising? Hope you go far & enjoy every day,

Thanks, I think she is beautiful too! For now, we need to sail her from Georgian Bay to Bayfield, Lake Huron. By all accounts the North Channel is right up there with the BVIs for great cruising grounds...we are novice sailors though, so nothing too challenging. Then, as life circumstances permit....the Caribbean , then...who knows! We have big plans, but for now...we just have to learn how to sail her!

There are some folk that believe that everything has a life force, endowed with the energy of the person before.

Re: This is where I am starting!!!
I don't know about a soul, but definitely a personality, and much like differing designs, each one is unique. Personally I talk to mine, and it responds as it can. Some people I know view such things as boat as simply a mere tool, and treat them as such...I take a more personal view of my boat(s).
Heck, even my cars all have nick-names..

Do you think boats have souls?

They do! and your soul goes into the boat and joins the boats soul -then you are married! Two souls make a temple!
