You're right. I've experienced that first hand when some big salmon got sidetracked into our marina on their way up the Genesee River late season. The first time one hit the hull was definitely one of these WTH moments! But that happens randomly unlike the subject thud which is consistently once a day at around the same time.

The idea of loosening the Rigging is not a good idea assuming the rig was tuned correctly, you will put it in jeopardy, i.e., out of colum.

We experience a night and good off Broughton Island on the east coast of Australia and mutton birds would occasionally fly into the Rigging at night. I eventually solved the mystery my spending part of the night sitting on the deck with a comforting bottle of rum and Coke waiting for the next to occur. Good luck
