The price of the Garmin chip prices
I have a Garmin 741 touch screen and heard that Garmin has raised chip prices to 350. per download ! Wow I remember 150 !?
I found out that Garmin just purchased Navionics company and new chips are on the way that will will work in both units.
I think 350.00 is a rip per chart. I can see alot of sailors just ordering explorer charts !
Tell me what you think to spend 1K for the unit than 350 per chip ?(chart)

Re: The price of the Garmin chip prices
Depends on the level of finish you want. If you just need navigable charts then it’s $150 for all US coastal waters. If you want sattelite imagery, 3D navigation mode above and below the water line etc etc then it’ll you’ll have to take out a second mortgage for the same above mentioned waters.

Re: The price of the Garmin chip prices
Online with Garmin, they have updated their G2 charts to include some shading features so price has increased a bit. Still all coastal waters of US and west Canada (HXUS604X) for $220 USD Part#010-D0559-00 (download) Part#010-C1018-20 plus a $75 rebate if you trade in your old card or have downloaded old G2 maps, so $145 when it’s all said and done.

Buy it while you can. They are just following the herd, all software companies are quickly adopting the subscription model. In a few years, you wont be able to buy anything, just rent it for a year. It guarantees them a constant cash flow

No, Garmin’s business model is to become dominate by buying other companies out, then driving prices through the roof, particularly with any subscription services
It’s what they did with aircraft electronics, except there they have a real advantage, the FAA mandates up to date charts

Connect the GPS serial port to a $37 Raspberry Pi B and install OpenCPN. Download all US navigable water charts over WiFi. Display on your existing HDMI monitor. Total cost assuming you have the monitor about $75. And updated charts are free forever.

This is getting more and more likely as I contemplate end-of-life options for my 6-year-old Garmin plotter, which they declared "legacy" and unsupported within 12 months of my purchase.
I'd factor in the cost of a sunlight-readable, water-resistant touch screen display, which brings the cost up quite a bit.
But $350 and up for charts that the government offers for free? Never!
I'll get by just fine without the "fish-eye view" and other custom crap, thank you.

Why would they care? They're making money hand over fist with their current business practices. People vote with their wallets. Overcharging for free data and dropping support for nearly-new equipment is apparently what the market demands.
