The beginning

We bought our first boat a trailer sailor, a 1973 clipper marine 23'. It has alot of little issues to take care of. First one is to get the boat farther forward by 2' so i have some tongue wt. I will spend the winter working on little things and getting maintenance done. I would thank everyone for everything I have read here and any advise I get in the future.

Re: The beginning

Is your trailer made in such a way that it is fairly simple to move the axle? Ours was bolted together so that we made this change in the parking lot with a few jacks. With the boat in the water, for the record...

Re: The beginning

Unfortunately no, or it would have been done before the 4 hr drive home. I have to cut the winch post off and move it forward and then drag it to the river and float it enough to move the boat forward, then take it home and one at a time cut and pull bunk board supports to the hull and weld them back to the frame without hurting the hull.

Re: The beginning

First trailer sailer I ever brought had a similar problem with not enough weight on the drawbar and this would cause it to get the wobbles on occasion. It too had a single axle that was difficult to move rearwards. I figured that in the previous 30 years or so of it's life, it had not been a problem for past owners and looked at other ways to move weight forwards. In the end, just packing stuff up front and placing the outboard on the cabin floor during transport solved the problem for me.

Re: The beginning

We are in Silverton Oregon, about an hour away from the Columbia river hence the trailer sailor. I will move the boat forward and put a removable cross member under the keel, after the boat goes forward there wont be anything able to support the keel. If I have a removable crossmember I can remove it to lower the keel and clean the pocket. Any opinions?
