Tartan 38

Anyone have any experience with the Tartan 38? I currently have a Cape Dory 28 that I've sailed for the last few year and am looking at upgrading to something bigger. I've done a little searching and it looks like the Tartan 38 is basically the same hull as the Tartan 37 with a taller rig and deep keel. Has anyone raced with it? How would it do cruising? Any known issues on Tartan hulls in general to be aware of? As always, thanks in advance for your input!

Join the Facebook tartan group. Or the email group at tartanownerslist@groups.io

There are guys with every make and model of Tartan.

In general, check where the chain plates come through the deck and Genoa tracks

Re: Tartan 38

If you can live with the deeper keel it should be a fun boat. Being a S & S design it will go to weather like few boats of that era. The "j" is 16' & " I is "50' so the genoa will require some mussel, (larger racing crew). For cruising a small headsail and rollar furling would be very desirable. I have a bigger brother to the t38.It's a Tartan 41 from the 70's and have cruised it (2 transatlantics), Caribbean, Bermuda's etc. Also a S & S and it behaves nicely. Locally I'll occasionally single hand. Many 37's have cruised extensively including RTW. Like any 70's boat a good survey would make sense.
