Tartan 30 owners: HEEEELP!

I recently bought a 1973 Tartan 30, hull# 103 (or so I think. Read on ...). I'm now trying to initiate an insurance policy for it and I'm running into a problem. The insurance company is insisting that all boat made after 1972 have a 12 digit HIN, yet the brass plate on mine just says simply "Hull Number 103". That's also all the title and registration reflect. Insurance company is saying I need to either:

1. Find the 12 digit HIN, or
2. Prove to them that this 1973 wasn't issued a 12 digit HIN, or
3. Provide evidence that this boat is actually a 1972 or earlier.

Have any of you other T30 owners run into this?

Is there another ID plate hidden somewhere on the T30? (I've searched everywhere)

Anybody know how I can find out which hull numbers were made in which year (I've searched the web)?

Any other words of wisdom you can offer me (besides "don't hit anyone till you're insured")?

Thanks!

Alot of sailboats made prior to 1974 only had a hull number. You need to get with your state for a HIN. Check your title. you may already have one and just need to imprint it on your boat.

Hull identification numbers weren’t required until on or after November 1, 1972.

Re: Tartan 30 owners: HEEEELP!

Thanks Everyone. I was finally able to find a T30 owners list with hull numbers and year. It looks pretty certain that hull number 103 can't have been 1973, more likely early 1972. I'm pretty sure my boat is a '72, even though the title and registration show '73. If that's true, then my insurance problem is solved but now I've got a boat registration problem!

Think about this....it's still 2013 but 2014 model cars, motorcycles etc are at the showroom. Your boat could be a '73, but made in '72.

Yes it just means it was in stock for a while before someone bought it, maybe from a dealer.

Re: Tartan 30 owners: HEEEELP!

You could be right, Everything I've read about HIN's state that all boats manufactured after Nov 1972 shall have a 12 digit HIN, not sold after 1972. But ... the insurance company was happy with calling it a 1972, so I'm good.

Bring it on, I'm insured!
