Tartan 28

Hi everyone, I'm new on this forum and looking forward to all the support and community from everyone.

We are a young family(wife plus a 4 year old and 2 year old). looking to get into coastal cruising in Vancouver BC Canada and surrounding area. We would primarily go on short trips to 2 night cruises along the coast.

We gave found a lovely tartan 28 and it has been used very little. The current owner got it for his family but they aren't interested in cruising so it has been sitting in dry dock for about 1 year

Everything is looking in perfect condition exept there is a seperation from the keel and the fiberglass. A line crack that runs the entire length of the keel. Is this normal? Thanks again in advance

Re: Tartan 28

Personally I would advise getting an experienced professional to do a detailed inspection.

Even if (especially if) the boat is being offered very cheap.

No need at this point to get an official Survey done, but someone with experience of that specific boat would be ideal.

IMO worth paying $500+ for this service,

especially if it helps you dodge a botomless project money pit

but try to arrange it so if he finds a deal-breakingly expensive must-fix, the inspection stops and you pay much less.

the bolt on keels sometimes do this. a slight flex will cause the crack where the keel joins the hull that needs to be caulked. i would take a close look at the keel bolts in the bilge. make sure they are tight and there is no corrosion. get a survey done.

Have a professional look at it.

Better now than after you own it.

Re: Tartan 28

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, bcbuilder.
Yes, it's fairly common on externally hung fin keels. Some used to call it a "C&C Smile".
