Talk some sense into me please!

What the OP still does not seem to have posted yet is just what he is going to use the boat for. Probably not for long distance cruising but there are still lots of other possibilities.

But given that he has a place to keep a boat with no size restrictions there is the chance that the 42 footer might be a better choice if it will spend lots of time at a free dock and be used as a party boat that more folks could party on.

Until one knows what the boat will be used for it is hard to say what boat is best.

Tomfl....fair point and to that point it may speak to sticking with the existing one for a while as this is my first boat(that wasn't a family boat) and sailboat.

My plan is to cruise down to ft.laud, Miami, keys, etc with a buddy or girlfriend and maybe spend a weekend to a week on living aboard depending on the trip. Also the sandbar with some friends and beers is in the plan. Racing is kind of a pipe dream but I have experienced friends that said they would crew for me to try it out.

I didn't listen, because that's just something I apparently don't do when smart people give me advice... And now I want a bigger boat...

I would suggest waiting another year or so. You will learn what features are important to you and your perception of the ideal boat will morph over time. Go to boat shows and frequent yachtworld so you will know the market...in another year it is possible you'll have your eyes on yet another perfect boat. In other words don't jump the gun.

Don't listen to nay Sayer's. There is a reason why prices are so low on sub40 footers. Get the bigger boat, set it up correctly.... There will be room for two girls in the cockpit and two on the foredeck...how much fun do you need?

If you can carry the load get the bigger one as well.. play on the 30 till she sells.. gives you a break from the refit and keeps the systems from hardening up.. and the gull crap..

a 42 will be a lot more expensive to moor and maintain if you are not living aboard is it worth it? Depends on your budget. I liked the Landfalls a lot when they came out though. Beware, many C&C's were cored hulls, not sure about the Landfall... but if it's really cheap you might need to be asking why...

I'm with Ann on this one. Two boat ownership is tough, even when you love them both. I though I would sell the little one fast- 5 years and a lot of frustration had to happen first.
Learn everything from the small one, and don't look for a bigger one till you sell your first one.

You know, guys,

When we talk sense, the OP argues the "bigger boat" to himself. Maybe we should go on more about all the perceived benefits of the bigger boat; then he could argue our side for us!

For instance, how great it would be to be working, re-fitting the big boat, instead of going sailing.... How much fun it would be to increase the local economy by spreading his dollars around.... And just think of all the benefits of having a slower learning curve for boating: more time for contemplation, internet, all the fun......or fun missed, perhaps?
