tablet navigation Open CPN

I have decided to use a Samsung tablet as my main source of navigation. I am currently running Open CPN on a computer and want to know if I can use the Navionics maps with Open CPN? I need South America Charts. I am new to using electronic navigation. Actually I find learning Open CPN has a bit of a learning curve. I have used chart plotters a little and chose to use a tablet with a water proof case. I would also like to print maps off the computer in the areas I intend to travel. I dont think I can do this with Navionics maps. Any input would help. It has been a tough decision on weather to go with a computer or chart plotter. Thanks

svsiren...
OpenCPN does not support Navionics proprietary charts.
In South America, the only country providing free charts usable with OpenCPN is Brazil and they can be downloaded by the integrated chart downloader plugin (+ a few charts for Peru + part of Argentina, which was recently withdrawn from the official HO website and replaced by non-free S-63 cells, but sure can be obtained if you need). For the rest, you can probably license (=buy, not cheap) the encrypted S-63 charts, which are not yet supported in the Android version of OpenCPN, just in the Windows/Linux/macOS version (= Make sure the "Samsung tablet" is actually not an Android device if you decide to go that way).

I have found SeaClear II a lot easier to learn and use than CPN but the charts I have for Latin America excerpt for the NOAA coverage of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Is. are old. Anyone know a good source for inexpensive, recent, electronic charts for Central America and the Caribbean?

Hi, I'm an Open CPN user in Brazil. I t works fine in my Macbook Air. You can look for tablets that runs Windows and Android in the same machine.
That's the link for the Brazilians Charts. http://www.chm.mb/box-cartas-raster/...sponiveis.html
But te server was not responding today. Probably a temporary problem (president impeachment?)
Otherwise, I have some files. I think I can send you by email.

Regards,

CM93 world charts, very good detail/info, works very accurate here in south Africa with open cpn on my Android tablet ( xperia ), android phone (Samsung S5 ) and my laptop (Dell latitude )
Took 2 screenshots from the coast of Brazil. Same area just zoomed out some.

Dear Subie,
How old are the CM93 charts that are you using?
I have been only able to obtain the 2011 version.
With regards

Hello TL2
Mine is also 2011. Very little info has changed on our coastline, harbours etc since 2011. But I always double check around the harbours with the latest local pilot book edition .
Always amazed if it shows a rock somewhere it is exactly there.
Let me just point out also that I am no ocean sailor. Just doing small coastal trips for fun and adventure.
Maybe the more experienced sailors will need more info from a chart program.
Ignorance is bliss afterall :-)

Re: tablet navigation Open CPN

I have a laptop running Windows 7 and Open CPN. The CM93 2011 version give detailed charts of South America.
As a backup I have a Samsung T330 tablet using the latest version of Android.
I have tried Navionics but have opted to run Transas ISailor. The navigation programme is free but the charts are charged for.
Just checking the costs, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, are priced at $52 Australian each. They are updated regularly, the last as of 2 June 2016.
Having run the two systems around Indonesia, PNG and Australia I have found major differences in the details. ISailor excells in Indonesia but CM93 is the more detailed in PNG. Australia about line ball.
Cheers

Re: tablet navigation Open CPN

In a french forum they have managed to convert the entire world for navionics into kap files. They can be used alongside cm93. From here you will notice that navionics is based on the same survey data as cm93, so there isn't much difference, the soundings in most cases are identical.

In a very few areas (<5%) navionics is more detailed, but it is always questionable because they still sometimes use their "sonar chart" as the official nautical charts. This data is provided by users, and is often inaccurate and no accounting for the current tide state correctly.

For true open charts we need to find a way to use crowed sourced sounding data in open sea map.

Are you able to bring NMEA data wirelessly into the android? if so how?

PC version has a TCPIP network setting to output data but i can nt figure out how to get it to the Android devices.

Re: tablet navigation Open CPN

Im new at posdting so forgive errors please.

I have the paid version of Android working fin on Samsung Tablet and Galaxy 5.

My problem is trying to get NMEA data from pc to android via WiFi or Bluetooth. Are there instructions for this somewhere? I have a network aboard (Iridium Go not connected to ther internet)

I have successfully installed Virtual Serial Port Emulator VSPE and have created ports to share the data. I have Open cpn on the pc as well as Coastal explorer. I have created a tcpip server on the VSPE and my local WiFi connects to it fine. I can connect my iPad 2 easily. The iPad sees the tcpip server as "device" and is not listed "choose network" but you can select it and it connects. The data can then be seen on inavx using the tcpip connections settings 169.254.12.9 port 5555.

The android however does not see the tcpip nmea server.

I'd be happy to elaborate on the setup. Can i attach a PDF file i used for setting up the nmea server?

Thanks for the support Ted
