Tablet for Navionics

Looking for some feedback on a tablet that will survive marine use. Had to get a new iPad because a bit of spray fried charging port (thankfully still had warranty). Looking around I came across 3 possible candidates: Samsung Active Pro, Panasonic toughbook, Dell Latitude 7220 rugged. Both Dell and Panasonic have ability to swap batteries, but I can also use a power pack to recharge Samsung underway. My use is on the Chesapeake bay, so no offshore.

I find my iPad perfect with Navionics. Just make sure it has the GPS chip.

The downside is that it doesnít run OpenCPN.

If you are looking to run Navionics, then you can scratch the Panasonic and Dell. Navionics doesn't run on Windows.

You can buy used iPads with GPS all day in Ebay for $300.

Re: Tablet for Navionics

I looked into the same thing. But there are so few tablets that are waterproof. You are better off buying any tablet and getting a waterproof case or bag for it.

BTW, Navionics is good, but you should try C-Map. The night time mode is much better on the eyes, IMO.

We've been happy using a 10" Samung TabA, which has a built in GPS and charges via a long mini usb cable off the boat's 12v electric system; we do keep a suitably sized ziploc bag handy, but for the most part it just sits happily under the sprayhood/dodger.

Re: Tablet for Navionics

We usually use Samsung tablets. Haven't needed any additional waterproofing "active" models, probably because we usually select a likely OtterBox case, then choose the Samsung tablet that fits it.

Re: Tablet for Navionics

I bought this Lenovo tab recently. It has a built in GPS. Used it on a one week charter with an Anker battery pack and a SeaSucker mount. It worked well.

Re: Tablet for Navionics

Wholybee is absolutely correct - there is no version of Navionics that runs on Windows. You need either Android or iOS.

I agree it is much easier to use the tablet in a waterproof bag than to find a rugged/waterproof version.
