Swing keel

Help!!! I am going to do the great loop in a monohull macgregor 25 with a swing keel she will only have a 6ft mast for antenna and lights. The keel could stand some repair and I am going to motor around anyway if I keep the weight low and no sails do I really need the keel for this trip??? Thanks in advance Mike

Re: Swing keel

Looking at a drawing of the boat, I'd say the swing keel is not necessary for your purpose. Be aware though, that the rudder is going to hang down past everything else, so will be the first thing to run aground. Does it have the ability to kick up?

Re: Swing keel

Only 1 response to my question that I am thank full for?? I would have assume that the rest of you whom I have say have stuffed shirts for anything but a sailing purist could not reply and give an honest answer!!! Plan on doing the whole sailing gig after the loop and buying a larger vessel. Still have my original mast and would like a few more replies in regards to pulling keel out for this trip??

If you really want folks to give you the benefit of their knowledge and experience, you might want to retract the above statement.

This stuffed shirt is not motivated to be of service to you now.

Re: Swing keel

I could reply but I know nothing about the sailing or power boating in a mcgregor.
I don’t know if there are many owners of them on this forum.

Re: Swing keel

Thanks aka none and benz was just a simple question if it would upset the stability of the boat no mast and keel gone was prob off kilter with previous stuff shirt statement would just like a few honest opinions about no mast and weight kept low I know they have water ballast vessels am on a tight budget and thought small macgregor could go around great loop fairly cheap was worried about handling without keel Mike

Re: Swing keel

We had a Hunter 240 very similar to the MacGregor 26. When the wind blew on the beam side, and you were trying to come into a dock, the keel helped keep the boat from sliding sideways and gave a lot of extra control. I'd keep it as there really is no reason I can see for removing it.

Re: Swing keel

You're welcome. But why would you want any more opinions after mine?

Sorry, couldn't resist....

Re: Swing keel

Leave the keel on, you need some bite forward or the boat won’t turn well. If the keel is removed you just have a smooth hull forward the will want to “skid” thru turns and take them very wide.

Re: Swing keel

No offense intended, but I think most people are having trouble understanding your post. Is English your first language? The lack of punctuation and any logical sentence structure are jarring. Can you please re-phrase?

Re: Swing keel

Lose the rudder but keep the keel to deliver one more odd approach.
