sun lotion over varnish

Is there a sun lotion that can be wiped or sprayed on top of varnished teak?
If I cover my varnished teak and protect it from the sun it lasts indefinitely. If it is exposed to the sun it requires annual varnishing or at least another coat every two years.
So, if the UV destroys the varnish, how about spraying it with, perhaps an oil free sun lotion? or some lotion that does not wash off?

Do a web search on UV stabilizers for varnish. They exist but not sure they're going to give you what you really want. For "forever" protection, the closest you'll get is to use something like Sunbrella.

Re: sun lotion over varnish

If you are using exterior varnish it has UV blockers in it. It's a much darker color than clear interior varnish.
I found even here in the PNW where sun is not a great issue you need 3 coats per year to avoid breakthrough.
I agree, if you really want to solve this get a good thick buildup of varnish and have Sunbrella covers made for when the boat sits.

Or you could paint it all with pepto bismol then wash it off when you want to use the boat....

Exterior teak, which I have a LOT of I have decided is like mowing grass. I gave up on mine and one day may have it painted or just let it go and have it done before I sell the boat.

I’ve noticed that sun protection skin products cause varnish to get soft ... so soft that you can scratch it with your fingernail . Re coating is a hassle because the entire softened varnish film must be removed

I don’t know if it’s the secret sun cream formula , the acids from your hands or a combination of the two

The modern way to retard UV damage is with nano particles of silicon

This is how aircraft protect paint films from UV burn

A popular nano particle product is. Permanon

https://www.permanonfinishes.com/pro...t-supershine-1

It’s a concentrated liquid that you mix with distilled water... then mist the surface and wipe off with a microfiber cloth

Typically the darker the stain the longer the underlying material lasts. Due to uv ray blocking

Re: sun lotion over varnish

We had tried the same stuff the "Blue Man" group was using to paint their skin. Essentially it is an elastomeric latex paint that theoretically can be peeled off in a subsequent season. In any event there is a strong ammonia smell as the coating dries.

The results were mixed. The stuff lasts forever when left on but if left in place too long it loses the elasticity and breaks apart when trying to peel it off. Still the varnish below was in good shape.

There is some adhesion so I was experimenting with different release coatings that would be applied first. As I recall vegetable oil was a good release coating.
You need to put it on fairly thick since thin sections tend to break rather than peel off.

Skip the varnish, just cover all your teak with Sunbrella and your teak will always look as good as new. ;>)

Use the sun lotion. I am sure it will work if you follow the directions. Apply every 3 hours....

Re: sun lotion over varnish

If you do cover your teak with sunbrella, the dust will accumulate underneath and with a little wind your teak will be scuffed up anyway!
