Straightening Stanchions

Has anyone had any experience straightening stanchions? I bought a Catalina 470 that has been stored outside on the shore of Lake Saint Clair MI with shrink wrap. A few of the stanchions are bent in towards the center line. I believe that this happened from wind pressure on the shrink wrap. I don't want to just push outboard with the stanchion in its deck fitting.

Thanks.

It's very unlikely that wind pressure on shrink wrap bent your stanchions. I would search for hull/deck damage from a collision.
When it comes to hardware which may save my life I tend to replace it if it has been compromised. Catalina is still in business so you are in luck. I bet you can purchase replacements from the manufacturer.

I cad a collision on a mooring where another boat T-boned me.
I put my foot on the top, pushed back, but the kink is a weak spot, so I pushed another tube up inside the stanchion to reinforce it.

Yes, shrink wrap with a load of snow has bent many a stanchion...

For any SS work, including straightening parts, I have used Whitewatermarine in Port Huron.

White Water Marine
For something small like this, you will have to remove the stanchions yourself and bring it there, and pick up after they are done with it. They will replicate any stanchions they deem not safe to straighten.

Not affiliated with them, but I had them build me an arch, boomgallows and much other smaller stuff.

Jim,
I had 4 stanchions bent to 45 degrees during a winter gale on Lake Michigan. I didn't cut around the stanchions before installing my tarp--ergo the damage. I took them to a metal shop and they said the metal had been too fatigued and would not be safe to straighten. A costly error on my part. Good luck and safe sailing . . . Rognvald

Re: Straightening Stanchions

If it is just the stainless tubing that fits in a deck socket then a metal supply place will have 316 tubing in the right diameter and wall thickness.
Hacksaw with a very fine tooth blade and a drill, I replaced 4 for less than the cost of one from a marine place. Absolutely no difference what so ever, Not some magic 316 that the boat industry uses.

Re: Straightening Stanchions

Catalina Stanchions and most deck hardware are made in California by Garhauer. You can easily buy online affordable replacement parts for your Catalina.
You can also straightening stanchions using oxy/acetylene torch but in addition to the specialized equipment required, you need a bit of experience and, in addition, stainless need to be polished after.

Mine bent in Irma - and I chose to replace. Stainless fatigues when cycled and I didn't want to take risk with something as important as my stanchions! Kept the old ones as spares and / or cheater bars!
